coltbean
OK I have a recently acquired a 1961 Winchester Model 70 30/06 Featherweight. I am going to purchase a Nikon Buckmaster scope and can not decide between the 3x9-40 or the 4.5x14-40. I have made up my mind on this scope and have these on other guns so please do not turn this into a get this scope instead discussion. I would just like to know which would be a better fit for this gun.
wtnhunt
Nothing wrong with the buckmaster scopes. Guess which you go with would depend on what type hunting you plan to do. Here a 3-9x40 works well.
johnf
Both are great scopes. If you are planning on shooting a lot passed 250 yards I would go with the bigger one. I shoot a 3-9X40 prostaff and go out to 300 yards just fine, but that extra magnification sure would be nice. If your staying under 200 most of the time I would get the 3-9. coltbean
Yeah it will mostly be shorter distances I just thought that I may want the greater magnification if I go out west somewhere. I guess I will put the 3x9-40 on it and if I ever need more I can borrow the 4.5x14-40 off of the AR!
Arkansas Boy
yeah i would def. suggest the 3-9x40
Shaun_300
I have a 4-12x40 on my .300 WSM and a 3-10x40 on my .25-06. Like them both, my 4-12x40 is nice for the longer distances, but it's no huge difference when I compare it to the 3-10x40.
Flintlock1776
Depends on what you are shoting for. The higher magnification will shrink your FOV big time if you get game in close. For long range shooting the bigger power is better, closer in go with the lower power one
