markyj987
I have a Rem. 597 and have owned it for maybe 5 years. I have not shot a great deal with it--maybe 300 rounds max. It's extremely accurate and is a great deal of fun to shoot. What isn't fun is that out of every 6 or 8 rounds, it jams and the ejected round has a dent on the casing. Has anyone run into this? The gun has been cleaned--and I just cleaned it again today--probably the best cleaning job I've ever done--and I may try it some more, but has anyone else had a problem with it? I went to a firearms show today and a dealer was telling me that this was pretty common with the 597 and after a Google or two, it apparently is. It will cost at least $50 for a gunsmith to look at it, but I'm really peeved--has anyone else here had this problem with the 597? If I get fed up enough--I'm going to get rid of it and get something else. I've thought about a 10/22, but am thinking about a bolt action instead of a semi. Any thoughts or recommendations? I'm so irritated--if this repair costs over $100, I may never buy another Remington and that's too bad because they make one heck of a shotgun! hangunnr
IMO the 597 was a dog from the gitgo. I know there's some that run fine but at it's best it's still not a 10-22 or a Marlin model 60 for that matter. As far as a bolt 22... Take a look at what is offered from CZ. They are the best bang for the buck in this department. hangunnr
Shaun_300
I find it's all about the ammo with mine. It does not like the bargain deal stuff, as long as I use good ammo in it like CCI (regular or stingers) or Remington Yellow Jackets it shoots fine. As soon I put that cheaper stuff that you get for $10/500 at Walmart, it will not fire a whole clip without jamming. I found that with other semi's too, I had a Savage that would be the same way. wtnhunt
I specifically asked this question back last December of our wal mart gun counter/sporting goods manager and he told me the only problem he knew of was the plastic clips. The newer 597's have metal clips. I bought our 7 year old daughter a 597 for Christmas. We have probably put well over 200 rounds through it, not a problem out of it as of yet Mark. Shaun may be right, don't know. All we have used ammo wise has been cci, federal, or remington.
woolybear
Do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache. Use it as a $50 coupon towards your next purchase.
Mach1
My brother and I occasionally had this problem in our 10/22's. Problem went away when we quit buying the cheap ammo.
Grady269
Clean then oil I have a 597 in .17HMR, after about 100 rds it starts to jam. Put it in the vise and run Gun Scrub through it wipe it down and leave it overnight. Next day oil lightly including the magazine lips. Rimfires are DIRTY guns and if you have not cleaned it regularly you may have to do some scrubbing as well, but the oil part is very important. If I had it to do over again I would have bought a bolt gun.
