jerdanmagic
I just started chasing turkeys 3 years ago but as of yesterday night I was officially birdless. My wife and I went out last night and roosted some birds in a stand of cottonwoods on the edge of a wheat field. I was so excited last night that I found it hard to sleep. When the alarm went off this morning, my wife declined my invite so I went on a solo mission. It was very foggy and drizzling this morning and by 6:40 I had set my decoys and concealed myself in a deadfall of limbs. I conversed with this tom from the night before for several minutes right at first light and I heard wing beats a few moments later. With the fog settled in over the wheat field, I could just make his outline about 100 yards. A little more coaxing with my quakerboy box call and he came in on a string. 30 yard shot and that's all she wrote. It was so nice to have a hunt that went just like I drew it up! I felt like I was watching a RT video. I kept thinking, "Okay, now is about the time he will turn and leave." But he kept on keepin' on. Finally! Over the last three seasons, I've had hunts go south in about every possible manner. Hunts that were doomed from the gitgo and hunts that soured with turkeys at 35 yards. It's been frustrating at times, but I've learned a lot though these tribulations and this morning, it all came together. All-in-all it was only about a 15 minute hunt, but it was 15 minutes that I will cherish forever. What a magical morning in the turkey woods. 17.5 lbs, 9 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. Dakota
Ahhh I remember my first longbeard lol Will! I'm still waiting......what are the odds of your first turkey being a hermaphrodite! :D:D So I have the once-in-a-lifetime bird at the taxidermist and will have to settle for a regular ol' longbeard from now on. Poor me. :D:D That is an awesome bird by the way! Congrats! Dakota
BAMABUCKS
Congrats on the first. The wonderful thing about turkey hunting is that we are always learning something new. Usually from our mistakes. Sounds alot like life doesn't it.
jerdanmagic
Thanks everyone! I chicken fried up half the breast meat the other night for my wife and I.....boy was I surprised! Very, very tasty. I don't know if it was because it was my first and that made it taste better or what, but I'm putting wild turkey breast just a shade under backstraps. Anyone else?
