Grady269
I am thinking of putting togehter a rifle for my son to shoot this year for deer season from the Buddy Stand, and maybe the haybales. He is young (7) and I am reluctant to go out an buy a new gun and have to cut it down. He is shooting a CD 20ga. now and I bought a spare stock for it and shortened the one that came with it. Here is what I was thinking... I have an Encore, original with a couple of barrels (Dad Calbers). I bought a new Flextech stock a couple of years ago and still have the original butt stock. I took the recoil pad off the old stock and I noticed the screw troughs ran all the way up the stock. I think I can cut off a 2.5-3" and still have plenty of room for the scress from the recoil pad. Caliber wise I think .243 barrel will be my choice. Is there any issue of mounting a blued barrel to a stainless frame $$$? Anyone have any reservations about the Encore for a youngster? I like knowing that the hammer has to be cocked for it to go bang. I was thinking low rise mounts with a 2-7X 33mm OBJ to try and keep it down low? I can't seem to locate a barrel under 24" would like 18-20" Any advice would be appreciated
wtnhunt
Don't know about the encore. Would think the frame/barrel would pose no issues since they are intended to all be interchangeable. Several youth model rifles out there. All about preference really. Went with a browning a-bolt microhunter for my oldest daughter, she will be hunting with that rifle for many years to come. Nice thing about a bolt gun, you can load them with one round at a time with a kid if need be, so they can be used kind like single shots. Lots of folks think highly of the nef's single shots, have never shot one myself. The .243 is a good choice in my opinion. My wife and oldest daughter both hunt with a .243. Oldest daughter was shooting the .243 around the time she was 8 if I remember right.
whitetailtrax
I don't know about the encore either. Hard to beat the .243 for a youngster though. FYI - my son's first rifle was a brand new Remington Model 7 youth rifle in 7mm-08. I fell in love with this gun from the get-go. So much fun to shoot and very light weight! In fact I borrowed it for my bighorn sheep hunt last fall. He has harvested three deer, two antelope, and a cow elk in three years of hunting with it. The 7-08 is a really good caliber that doesn't kick much. Factory loads are easy to come by in most sporting goods stores or even Wal Mart. hungry hunter
As a NEF fan, you cannot go wrong with the different calibers avaible and you can order other barrels after you send the reciever and fore stock to the factory. the youth model in 243 would be sweet for his first rig. check out their website NEF.com
