Life Changing Letter

Ok well as most of you know from the "hot seat" thread I am currently unemployeed. Last Monday I had a phone intereview with a company in Washington State. The interview went great and we talked for 2 hours, the guy said I answered everything exactly how he wanted to hear. I gave him a follow up call and received an email from him 3 minutes ago. Within the email he stated that the head HR lady is sending me an "offer" letter and to expect it by Thursday. Now here is my question for people in HR postitions or people that have real jobs. If you interview over the phone with someone and it goes as best as it can, do you hire that person site unseen??? Do you think this "offer" letter is a letter offering me the job or offering me to come do a onsite interview??? I do not want to get my hopes up about being offered the job but my hopes are definantly up in the fact that the letter will bring good news either way. If I am offered the job, I will take it. This time in my life I need a huge change and I believe taking a job across the country would be big enough. Anyhow, to the people that know more about the hiring process than me, What is your take on this letter that is coming to me? Also I have not really asked for much on here but now I am, please keep me and my actions in your thoughts and prayers.

-Ben

My last "offer" letter was exactly that. A job offer. Of course it was contingent upon me passing a physical and a background check but it was an actual offer.

Of course the offers always came after a face to face interview, but who can say what their hiring practices are.

The bottom line here is that they should be hiring you based on your education, experience and background...not what you look like, what color hair you have etc., because that falls under "discrimination"...I have had both situations in my life where the agency has offered me the job without being seen, and after a second face to face interview...

The word "Offer" is generally not thrown around in the professional field lightly...usually a second interview is scheduled via telephone, and the word "offer" is never brought up...something like "we would like to have a second interview with you out here, show you around, bla bla bla", but no offer is made until then. Then again, some places only have one interview...

Basically, i would hope that they are not using the word offer to ask you for a second interview...but even if that is the case, i would bet money that says you get the job!!! They aren't going to spend the money to fly you out there, and change thier mind based on the fact that you look like Sloth from Goonies...:D

Congrats Benny, and i wish you the best!

i'm expecting you to get a contingency offer. ie: come work for us for (X) amount of dollars to start. you will get a raise or fired within 60 days. that means, of course, your interview and resume' was legit and you can perform as you said you can. prayers said, and best of luck. move out to washington, but pack lightly for now.

Dont know, but I would expect the offer to include your salary/benifits package. I hope the best for you Ben, its a change of scenery to say the least, but some really beautiful country out there. I hope you get not only a great offer, but you really will enjoy the company if/when you get there.

A lot of companies will give offer letters. An offer letter may consist of job descriptions and pay rates, and it can help both an employer and employee. As far as that companies practice, it may be the case that they hire over the phone, some companies will, guess that should be a question for you to ask them next time you talk with them.

Good luck.

Only hoping for the best for you when you get the letter. I've been in the unemployment situation myself recently and thankfully have found a steady job. Moving to Washington is a big step, but in this economy, I would take a job just about anywhere for more money.

Yeah, I will not turn down any job with this economy. In the past 2 months I have had about 50 meetings with companies, They all say they are on hiring freezes but I still set up the meetings to talk and get my name out and get contacts from them. I know I will not turn down any job offer that I receive. I also dont have anything holding me down anywhere. No wife or kids or anything, just friends and family, but thats why they make airplanes I guess, so i can come back and visit. I have never lived outside of the south and i am pretty nervous about it, but it will be a new chapter in my book and I love change so hopefully everything will work out.
