Neb. The Good Life
I plan on hunting this weekend and it looks like rain is in the forecast. I know that rain..at least showers will not hurt or throw the turkeys off their normal day, but I know they like to head to open fields to keep dry and use their eye sight as their primary defense. What are your guy's thoughts about the rain and turkeys? What are some good strategies to hunt them?
fly
I'd use a ground blind and stay dry in heavy rain. I'd also find a location I'd think turkeys will be at some time that morning and just cluck and purr every 10 minutes or so. I like to set up early and wait as opposed to walking and calling in heavy rain. Last year I had a few come into my calling and they never made a sound in the heavy rain. I didn't have a ground blind last year and they saw me the same time I saw them. They got away and I bought a ground blind. In light rain I'll try sneaking around more and I find the birds to be a bit more vocal. Good luck!
Flintlock1776
If the fields are real, real low in vegetation, maybe. They like to be dry and in tall grass they would get all soggy. I would suggest finding any wide open zones in the woods rather than covering the field.
Strut10
I'd use a ground blind and stay dry in heavy rain. +1 Set yourself a decoy or 2 out a little ways from the blind and call every 15 minutes or so. I'd suggest using a boxcall as it will carry better in the sound-deading rain.
Nut
Make sure you keep a couple calls in baggies. LOL I got soaked Monday. But I still had plenty of action and would have had one if I set up 20 yards different.
