Turkeygirl
I finally got up before 6am,lol. Got up at about 20 after 5, pulled some warm clothes on, walked up to the old gravel pit and sat there, watching the sunrise and listening for gobbles. Thought I maybe heardd a distant gobble from way down towards the swamp, but not sure if I did or my ears were playing tricks. BUT when I looked into the woods from my position, there sillouetted on a branch was a turkey...a hen. So that was fun to watch...she stood there preening forever then I caught movement from beind another tree and there was another turkey, guessing it was another hen, couldn't see all of it. Interestingly though the first hen pitched off and flew down into the woods directly towards where I thought I maybe heard a gobble....hmmm coincidence or not?? The other turkey pitched down a little later, I think same direction. They didn't make a peep though. Think I should go in the woods tonight and sit and listen? I know in the AM I might go over to the state land...
Adjam5
Nice crisp mornings listening for gobbles..ahhh:). That is important info there Ruth. You have to get to those Toms before those hens do. If you sit to night...bring a owl call, it might help as a locator.
Turkeygirl
I FORGOT to mention last night when I walked up back....went down an old logging trail in the woods next to the gravel pit....about 100% the dropping I found was a gobbler dropping, so there is a gobbler around there! Found a couple dust bowls in some sand as well. I would find it hard to believe the gobbler wouldn't be with those hens....

stevebeilgard
good luck, ruth. it may be a bit early for the gobbler to be with the hens. not sure how it is in ny, but it's not real active here just yet. any day now, though. crazyfarmer
gobblers are starting to hen up bigtime here now.. also, normally the gobbler wont roost to close to the hens. They should fly down first and then he flies down towards them. I'd go back but not to close and just listen to see where they roost. That way you know where the hens are so you wont spook them in the morning. About all you can do is listen for a gobble and go from there. Your best shot may be to try in the morning and see if he comes your way early. If not, dont push to far in there and risk spooking them. Back out and come back around 10am and try. Hopefully some hens have left and he's back to looking for a goodtime;)
