JimT
What fert should I use for apple trees? Just picked up a few. Hoping to attract some wildlife and eat a few ourselves.
wtnhunt
I use tree spikes here Jim, and they seem to work pretty well. The fruit spikes are 12-5-8. Really if using a bagged fertilizer, I would probably go with something like a triple 10 if it were me with the soil we have here. Be sure not to use too much fertilizer and also be sure to keep it out to the drip line.
coorsdrifter
I might be wrong, but I don't think it is recommended to fert trees/shrubs the 1st couple of years. It promotes foliage/top growth and you really want them to sink their roots down so,they won't get top heavy on you. Tominator
I grow apples, and I've read a few sources that say fertilizing a tree is, for the most part, a waste of money--it really doesn't do all that good. High nitrogen will promote new green growth, higher P and K numbers might help produce more flowers and fruit set. I've fertilized and not fertilized my apple trees, and I must say, I don't see too much difference from one year to the next.
