m gardner
This little issue just popped up and our government has decided that it's not enough of a threat at this time to close our border with Mexico:eek: (the bird flu in asia caused us to restict travel there). From what I've read the Mexican people are freaking out trying to control it. Wearing surgical masks and closing schools and soccer games. So far a few Americans have contracted it but the CDC issued a statement that they aren't sure how they contracted it (all the cases are along the border in California and Texas) and nobody died so far. I'm expecting that by monday Obama will issue a statement that America is at fault and give an official apology to Mexico for sending pigs there. Followed by a federal aid package. RTPROFamily
I am sure that Obama will find a way to blame "W" for this, he has everything else!
Leo
Seriously folks. Mexico hasn't had an epidemic ever in the history of their country. The U.S. can't boast that, but Mexico can. This is the country where if Americans drink the the water it almost kills them yet the Mexicans drink that water with no ill effects everyday! Say what you want about Mexicans but there is no denying they are tough people! If this flu bug is killing them, I don't want any part of it! We should be scared and taking this very seriously. No joke, this is a BAD bug!!!
woolybear
Speaking of bugs... I heard it's taking out hibernating bats in Va. almost to the point they want to erradicate the species(brown I believe) to stop the spread of the disease. There's more than just a political spin to this.
wtnhunt
CDC has issued warnings on this, the swine flu has been found in 20 people in 5 states. The federal government is supposedly doing everything they can, this according to the Obama folks, not at all convinced here. And seeing as how they are not even sure how it is spreading, this should be concerning. So far over 100 people have died from this in Mexico from what I am heard on the news this morning. Could be a very bad bug, or could also have to do with poorer medical help for people contracting the bug. I could agree with closing the border, and this is all the more reason to secure it. Secure the border and it also cuts off the problems with the drugs and guns that the mexican presidente is griping and moaning about. m gardner
I heard Ms. Sanchez (Janet Napolitano's right hand woman) last night being interviewed on Geraldo at Large and she said that they wouldn't close the border because at this point it wouldn't stop it because it's already here and besides we do alot of business with mexico. Like the economy takes precedence over human life? Mark

Texan_Til_I_Die
Just like the military uses live "training" like Grenada, Panama, and Haiti to stay sharp and develop effective procedures; Homeland Security could benefit from this situation by closing the borders and then determining how effective the action is. It might just give us the info we need to save our rears the first time we do have a real crisis. If I were in charge, I'd close the border. BTW - Obama supporters, are you happy that he has decided to reverse his position from the campaign and leave NAFTA in place without any changes? Texan_Til_I_Die
Nah, really? Sure. And for the exact reason stated. Not because I believe we're on the verge of an epidemic, but because I think it would be a great exercise to discover what works and what doesn't in case we really do need to shut down our border with Mexico in the future. m gardner
I believe that this flu is easily spread but won't kill lots of people. Usually we have 20,000 or so die during a flu season. Nice thing is that it seems to be age discriminant so far in who has died so they should be able to watch that age group moe closely. No one has died here yet (maybe one in california but they aren't sure yet) so armed with very little information statistics are hard to do at this point but I bet there are 1,000,000 in mexico that have it at this point in just trying to match the death rate here so far. I don't know how many of you have had the flu but it's no picnic even if it doesn't kill you. It can hurt our economy just by keeping people out of work and the medical costs alone. mark Edited April 29, 2009 by m gardner

I couldn't agree more. And the smoke screen you are talking about is nationalized health care.
