I took my youngest son Michael out on NY's youth turkey hunt. We had a blast! Saturday morning we set up way too close to a Tom on the roost accidentally( we had no idea he was roosted there) and when fly down time came. That bird wanted no part of us. We hiked around some more and did not hear any gobbles. Saturday was unsuccessful. The boys spooked a few toms at dusk last nigh while out riding, so we decided to set up on the ridge above where the boys saw the birds. It was the right decision. The birds were very talkative and responded to hen calls. They were getting worked up the way they were suppossed to. These 2 Jakes came and put on a nice little show for my us. My oldest son Joe can really be quite wicked with the mouth and slate call. Joe did some excellent calling and it is because of him Mike has a bird on the ground. These birds were getting fired up! All in all, it took us about 1 1/2hours to get a bird. This hunt was a good lesson of how a turkey hunt should go. Textbook. Bird weighed 17lbs and had 3" beard and 1/4" spurs.

Yesterdays hunt was etched in my mind all day...Today was my 1st day back to work off of a 28 week layoff and this memory kept me smiling all day as I am sure it will for a very long time. I was asked 2x at what I was smiling at, as I was looking out the window:p. I am very proud of my sons:). Joe for his NASTY calling capabilities and Mike for doing his end of the hunt. OH! I cannot wait for this weekend!
