Swine Flu

i know a hog farmer in OK that self activated his own quarantine at the first of last month. He has a huge operation, a Tyson farm i believe.. So this is not brand new and I believe they have been covering things up to avoid panic.

I am on my an emergency response team and we train for pandemics. We are on e of the first groups that get vaccinated when there is an outbreak, but they have not notified us for this yet, so i'm not at the paranoid stage yet, but am concerned that this may be worse than we know. Make sure you keep your hands washed often is the best you can do right now.

...all jokes aside, I see the US has its first death from it. A 23month old baby:(

Its bothers me since we have 50 hogs in the backyard so im worried about it now...

anyone know for sure what caused this? I know its got something to do with pig waste

Just came out of staff meeting here at the hospital. Here are a few facts to pass along:

The toddler was actually a Mexican citizen who was transported to a Texas hospital for treatment, apparently too late.

This influenza is now officially designated as H1N1, not "swine flu." The swine part is very misleading, since you can't contract it from pork. The virus is believed to be a mutated version that has picked up characteristics from both the previous versions of swine flu, which dates back to at least the 1970's, and avian, or bird flu. It is primarily being spread by human to human contact. Hospitals have been instructed by the CDC to take samples from all patients who exhibit flu like symptoms and send them in for testing. It takes about 7 days for the test results to come back. By that time, most people will have recovered. The vast majority of cases do not require hospitalization. Treatment is usually an anti-viral drug that's taken at home. If your doctor decides to start you on an anti-viral, make sure they have access to a supply, since most commercial drug stores are already sold out. The government however, has plenty in stock. (insert your own conspiracy theory here)

I see the WHO raised the threat level to 5, just a notch away from a full pandemic. It's easy for all of us to think "it's just the flu" which of course it is, but Dan made a good point, not to mention, "just the flu" can kill hundreds of thousands, as well as the economic impact that we sure don't need at this point.:(

Maybe a little more concerned now, but still not scared. Afraid there is quite a bit of over reaction going on. Three schools about 70-80 miles to the west of where my kids go to school were closed for non confirmed cases of the swine flu, however there still are no confirmed cases in TN.

What do you think of this............

My co-worker, who is the boss' son, is heading to Mexico for a vacation with his wife May 7th. They have 3 kids from 8 years to 6 months old who are staying home. At first we ribbed him a bit but now it is more serious. He will not cancel and totally comes unglued everytime he hears the words "swine flu". He called us (his Dad and myself) hippocrates because we believe the media now and didn't during the elections. He says regular old flu kills more people than swine flu ever will and that swine flu won't be a serious illness here in the states even if a person does catch it.

I just plain quit arguing with him:mad: He says it is just BS Hysteria.

Plus.........what is the infatuation with Mexico for vacations anyway:confused::confused: Why not hit the beach in the states somewhere and "stimulate" our own economy.

I lived through the last two pandemics and had the Hong Kong flu in the 1968 pandemic which was swine flu I believe and killed more people than normal that year. It wasn't the best time of my life but I lived through it. I think the one reason to worry is if this thing really takes off there won't be enough hospital care for everyone. Back in the "good old days" we didn't have the luxury of hospital care and when the local doctor got sick you were on your own. We learned how to take care of desperately sick people. I doubt that most today know how to bring a fever down or how to keep a person hydrated. It might be a good time to cruise the internet for this info and stock up on Gatorade or Pedialyte and ginger. I think most of Mexico has it because people that traveled to different places there brought it back. I also think it is not a severe flu but the death rate may soar because of the shear numbers of sick and the inability of our system to care for them.

Remember too that it's the tail end of flu season. The flu should be over and not spreading which is unusual. It should fizzle out shortly. We need to prepare for next year's flu season though, because it could be a beauty!

Economically it is a problem because people need the money badly and will come to work sick which may shut businesses down. I've seen it happen before. Remember, prepare for the worse; pray for the best.

I try not to worry about the things I really can't control.....yeah, I can wash my hands more, avoid sneezy folks, live in a bubble etc....

But I, personally, do not think its gonna make a whole lot of difference.

So, yeah I hope it goes away, but I'm not inflating my bubble just yet...:p

We had a couple schools close around us in Northeast Nebraska today.

But, I'm not really worried about it myself. I'm in good health, so should be able to fight it off without any problems. Only concern would be if my daughter got it. So watching her closely. Luckily, it's not in our school yet, but I'm sure it will be soon.
