SaskSniper
Hey guys, well I'm going black bear hunting next week so I decided to head to the range and fling a few arrows. While I was there I thought I would go through the chrony to see what I was putting out with the bow. I have to say it was less than I thought it would be, 242 fps. Now I'm not a big guy by any stretch of the imagination. 5'7", 130lbs, 28" draw length and pulling about 52lbs. So I turned my bow up a bit and was putting out 252lbs but I just wasnt as comfortable holding with the added lbs so I put it back. I do feel confident in my shooting/accuracy; I'm just wondering if I will have enough kinetic energy. I put my specs in a kinetic energy calculator and this is what it showed: 400grain arrow + 242fps = 52.03 ft.lbs Will that be enough? Thanks guys
Leo
I'd say you'll do absolutely fine with a quality cut on contact head. G5s Strikers, or Razorcaps come to mind. A 400gr arrow is minimum total arrow weight for Black Bear in my opinion. For the bigger and tougher stuff I'll sacrifice speed for the higher momentum of a heavier arrow. Typically you will not, I repeat will not get more K.E. from a lighter arrow shot from the same bow. Most times you obviously gain speed but you will loose K.E. and momentum. Anyone who's honestly checked this knows this is true for most setups.

I've seen women that are in their 60s and shoot bows with about 50 lbs and do fine. Their was a lady in her 60s shooting 50lbs and she took a Yukon Moose and Musk Ox. You'll be fine, honest. Orion_70
For thousands of years Man has killed countless animals with bows shooting flint tipped arrows. Most traditional archery comes in under that too but many fall to the recurve and longbow every year. Just make sure you have a quality razor sharp broadhead and you won't have any issues. Ya might not get a pass through but it will penetrate enough to do the job. Carry a big stick just in case . Good luck on your hunt!
