deershed
Last weekend late friday night Zach my son and I headed up to elk country arriving there shortly after daylight. We put in alot of walking all day sat. coming up empty on any sheds. Our highlight of the day was a toss up between a grouse and a turkey we saw from the jeep on the road. We spent the night up there then a friend of ours made the trip up and met us at the hotel we stayed at early Sunday morning.Just before coming into Bennezette Chris saw a sow and 3 cubs. Once again we were back out looking for that elusive elk shed. We hit some pines around some foodplots. We found a fairly fresh dead elk first. No head or hide, but alot of bones. After a couple hours of hiking and getting turned around. We ran into some bear,a sow and 2 cubs.I never got a pic of thre sow.We couldn't see her til all 3 finally took off up the hill. After the bear encounter and getting our bearings we started working our way back out.We were basically covering the same ground our trip out and Zach and I were walking out together. We were walking single file talking when I stopped dead in my tracks after spotting this. After the spike elk shed we worked our way back to the jeep uneventful. We searched a few more areas coming up empty at them too before calling it a day around 3 and heading home. I was tickled finding that spike and felt bad it the same time with being the only one to find one.I wished so bad Zach and Chris would have found one or found the one I did. I know Zach is ready for some more trips in the future. Despite the low 90's Sat. and the high 80's Sun. it was a great time. Finding the elk shed was Awesome in it's self, but it also means I won't have to make another trip for wt's trying to find that one more shed so I hit 160 for the year.I'm done now.... Here's some pics of the shed at home.
buckee
Those are somme great pictures. I think I can see Mama in behind the trees, on the left, in that first picture. I could be wrong, but it looks like her hind leg I see. That's a cool spike elk shed. How long is that thing? I'm going to be checking out a spot in a couple of days, where I know there is a bear den. I got surprised by a bear in it looking at me from about 20 yards a few years back:D, so I'm taking the camera, and bear spray this time, and I'll be ready for action Wish me luck...eh :D
