too_pointer
I know in some areas a shotgun is the only thing legal. I use a Rem 11-87, with a Nikon 2x7 Camo Pro Staff on it. Rifles are legal in my area, but I have taken 3 bucks with my shotgun. It just happened that my rifles were used by my sons. I shot all the deer with slugs ! What do you use ? too_pointer
wtnhunt
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? Have considered using my shotgun for deer hunting, but never have, kind of hard to give up the .270. Might try it next year in some areas where I have only short range shots. There is not a shotgun only season here and also buckshot is not legal at all.
slugshooter
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? That's odd wtnhunt, usually it's vice versa with slugs being illegal. Around here you can use basically anything you want but on the public land I hunt it is shotgun only.
MadHuntinPastor
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? VA is a little messed up. In Prince William County you can use an inline muzzle loader with scope, but NOT a slug in your shot gun. Buckshot is all they let you shoot. In the past I have harvested deer with both slugs and buckshot. My preference is bow and muzzleloader, but will use the shotgun at the end of the season. archerjg
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING I use slugs out of an H&R Ultra SlugMaster for deer hunting as their is no rifle season where I live. Archerjg
Shaun_300
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING i carry it the odd time. its hard to leave the .300 WSM on the shelf when i am going deer hunting though.
lil hunter
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING I use my dads 11-87 for deer a few times a season. I just never kill anything.lol. I shoot Rem 3" 1 oz coppersolid slugs. My dad shot his 8 pointer this season with that, dropped it right there. carbonhunter
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING I use it every now and then. Depends on where Im hunting at. Over corn the muzzleloader gets the nod. But if Im in the woods(generally pretty thick) or hunting during a drive, then the shotgun and multiple shots gets the nod. dosnt really matter what gun Im shooting as they all shoot brenneke's well enough to kill out to 75 yards and thats all Id ever ask out of the shotgun. I dont use a scope or rifled sites. It is much easier for me personally to shoot at deer moving or in tight cover using a bead.
MUDRUNNER
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING I USE A WINCHESTER 1300 WITH A RIFLED BARREL AND REGULAR RIFLE SIGHTS.BUCKSHOT IS ILLEGAL IN ILLINOIS,AND SO ARE RIFLES FOR DEER HUNTING.I DO USE MY MUZZLELOADER FOR OUR MUZZLOADER ONLY SEASON. tedicast
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? In Connecticut, on State owned land, it is shotgun/slug only. I have 2, 870's. One scoped , one unscoped that I hunt with. I just got my TC Encore set up with a 12 gauge slug barrel, and 2X7X33 Leupold vari-X2. Can't wait to shoot it. The Encore will be the only gun i hunt with this year.

JimT
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING We have a couple shot gun only areas here in Maine. I do not hunt there though. If I was going to I would use my 695 Mossberg slug gun. It has a Weaver V3 on it. Shoots pretty good.
David_218
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? Here in Indiana, we are restricted to using Shotgun Slugs, M/L's or Pistols. I received a 20 gauge Browning Gold Deer Hunter for Christmas and plan to use it this fall for Deer here in Indiana. In Kentucky I use my .270 Ruger M-77 MKII.
WABS
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? Hunting Shotgun slug season for years in SW MN -- took a lot of deer. But the season is only a couple of days, so I talked my brothers/Dad into switching over to the ML season (16 days) and not near as many pumpkins in the field if you know what I mean. AJ
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? I have used shotgun with slugs with success in the past. My county stipulates that you have to use shotgun with buckshot or you can use a muzzleloader. I will take the ML anytime over the shotgun. When we do deer drives we all take shotguns with buckshot. wtnhunt
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? [ QUOTE ] That's odd wtnhunt, usually it's vice versa with slugs being illegal. Around here you can use basically anything you want but on the public land I hunt it is shotgun only. [/ QUOTE ] Been that way as long as I have hunted here. As far as I know there is no buckshot allowed for deer hunting period in the state of Tennessee. Page 8 of the Tennessee handbook reads "3. Possession of shotgun ammunition loaded with more than one solid ball is specifically prohibited while hunting deer, bear, boar or feral hogs"
WABS
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? I'm not a big fan of buckshot -- MUCH prefer slugs. Understand in some situations there is a need for buckshot. Lost a doe once using buckshot -- probably wouldn't have happened had I been using a slug. Guest 2500HD
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? I have a dedicated slug gun just for deer. I use a H&R Ultra Slugger Deluxe 12ga topped with a 3-9x50 Tasco World Class scope shooting 2-3/4 Lightfield Hybrids and hold half dollar sized groups at 120 yards. When I sight in my new ML this summer i plan on shooting the slug gun just to see how it compares to the ML at 150+ ranges.
Guest Squirrelbuster
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? Where I hunt in NY rifles are not allowed so I use a shotgun. This was my first year gun hunting and took my first deer (Button Buck) at about 40 yards with and open sighted Mossberg 500.
Guest Rod
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? We are limited to shotguns w/slugs, muzzleloaders, or pistols in Illinois. I've killed a lot of deer with a shotgun over the years but prefer to use my muzzleloader. Tominator
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? Only if I have to. This year I went out, but never pulled the trigger. I had a spike and a doe at 90 yards one day, but decided to pass on the shot.
longislandhunter
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? need2hunt
Re: HOW MANY HAVE USED A SHOTGUN FOR DEER HUNTING ?? I hunted for a few years with an Remington 870 12 gauge, last year i picked up a Remington SP 20 gauge with cantilever barrel and put a scope on it. I was shooting the Remington CoreLokt slugs and had signted it in dead on at 150 yards, shot my doe at 80 yards and shot my buck at 150 yards. I'll be using this gun for a good long time.
