snapper
Well its been awhile since I shot a jake, not that I'm any less proud of him! I woulda swore up and down the way he was gobbling and the sound of the gobble it was at least a 2 year old. After working him for almost an hour...he finally came in through the thick stuff. I thought I saw the beard (musta been a weed or something), he was about 15 yards and all I could see at this point was the most important part...head and neck! He flopped straight to the ground...I finally realized it was a jake when I stood up and could see the longer center tail feathers. I have to admit, I was a little disapointed at first...then thought...this young bird worked me as hard as any long beard and that put a smile on my face! I forgot the camera at home...so now that I'm home, I'll see about a few pics before he becomes dinner!
huntn4bucks
Nothing wrong with that. Besides...you don't eat the spurs and beard anyways.
Dakota
Nothing wrong with that. Besides...you don't eat the spurs and beard anyways. That's right! I haven't shot a longbeard yet and out in WY the only bird that presented a shot to me was a bird I assumed was either a jake or bearded hen before I shot and turned out to be a hermaphrodite! Talk about a once in a lifetime bird! Anyways, I'd be more than happy to shoot a jake right now. I've been hitting my unit hard here and have been hunting them for the past five days straight. The season ends tomorrow night and I would be more than happy to shoot a jake let alone get a shot off! Congrats on a great bird and looking forward to seeing some pics! BAMABUCKS
Congrats on the bird. When he hits the table you want be able to tell the difference. Good to know you normally would not take out a young bird though.

Strut10
Must be the "in thing" in west PA for '09 ..........Jakes giving a guy a rough time. In the video I shot of Lil Strut10's youth day hunt, I said that I'd never had to work so hard to get somebody a shot at a jake. Congrats on supper!! :D

bluedog
Congratulations! I too am at the stage of my hunting career that I no longer shoot jakes EXCEPT I have always said that if a bird makes me work hard and puts on a good show, then I don't care if it is a jake or gobbler. You did good and had fun to boot! :)
snapper
Here's the pic... Sorry it isn't the greatest picture, my wife wasn't home so I was setting the timer and had the camera on a tripod. The bird was a little stiff and wasn't making it easy on me to do by myself.
