Tominator
Been finding a bunch in our spot over the last 3 weeks. Blacks are all but done, half frees are slowing down. Found one gray the other day and a student of mine found 2 yellows the other day too. They're still out there, but tough to find lately. All half frees I guess. wow!!! that's a mess. I was out for 3 hours last nite and only found 8, mostly grays and one long neck... buddy found 8 as well, all decent yellows. I have not found the big groups like I did last year... need to get some sunshine to go with this rain. btw... what do you mean by half trees? Edited May 1, 2009 by Tominator Spelled it wrong. MUDRUNNER
I managed to find 23 in about an hour and a half last weekend. If I didn't have food plots to work on all day I probably could've found a shopping bag full.

toddyboman
Don't trust them, or can't bring yourself to eat a dog pecker? I guess I don't trust them......grandpa, dad, or whomever I have ever been mushroom hunting with has never picked them so I don't pick them now... Until today I have never heard them called dog pecker:rolleyes::D What about these: Elephant ear This is another one I rarely pick, the only time I do is when I give them to others. I have found these things as big or bigger than softballs.....but I have never ate them.
woolybear
Not for me.. Last thing I need is a Jimmy Hendrix experience. Haven't seen one yet here.

Pick them and send them to me, I'll eat them. The half free variety of the morel is the truest, least toxic of morels. Edited May 1, 2009 by Tominator Spelled the Half free wrong. Pick them and send them to me, I'll eat them. The half free variety of the morel is the truest, least toxic of morels. If you know a way I will gladly send them your way;) So where do you guys find your morels?? Any certain types of soil/woods I should look? I found 2 last year and was like whoa!! Find them about anywhere really......Chris is right about those certain trees.....we also tend to find them around oaks. The other day I filled my turkey decoy up with morels...I found all of them in a fence row....which was mainly hedge trees, shag bark hickory and thorn bushes. Strut10
Just took a stroll trough my favorite pickin' ground this morning. Nothing. We got the rain yesterday and last night. Now we need some heat. Ditto on the trees.....mostly big poplar groves is where I find the most. Old apple trees is where I find the biggest.
