pointing_dogs_rule Posted May 1, 2009 Report Share Posted May 1, 2009 Just got back from South Dakota (Blackhills) and I got my butt kicked. I have taken 2 birds/year in Iowa for the last 19 years. It is easy here when you know where they roost and their habits. South Dakota is a whole different game. For you guys that hunt public land "MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU GUYS". I had trouble with everything... locating birds in the hills...calling birds, no success... should I re-locate or not??.... do I call more or less??? You guys that go out onto public land with no knowledge of the birds and can harvest one are good. I thought that I was good....NO MORE!! It was a fun time!!! On our trip I was stratchin my head the same way i bet you were until we finally got into the birds, the 3rd day- took 2 complete days to find birds. But once we found them, look out!! Wish things could have gone better for ya. Some of yall fellas that made SD this year need to shoot me a PM next year and lets get'em together. So could use a partner right now! I just got in from where I was planning to hunt on Tuesday {cannot get out tomorrow, opening day, due to work} and there were two trucks there full of guys with binocs... I may take a new approach if I do not score the first week. Try and locate some woods birds and go from there. Seems like every field around here is posted or being watched... I've had my butt kicked so many times by these SD turkeys this year (I think the score is something like 10-0 ) and have had to eat a tag that has taken me four years to draw! :mad: Oh well, I still have my Black Hills tag (which unfortunately unless some miracle happens I will not be able to go out again to fill) and a statewide archery tag.
