Turkey story you wont believe......

OK, last day of the season. Was supposed to go with my dad this morning. He called last night to tell me he saw a pretty nice one walk out of the woods yesterday while he was driving out (could have stepped out of the truck and shot him, but my dad is a true sportsman). Anyway..... we agree to tag team him this morning and meet at 5:40. Problem was I was on the end of a hose with a house fire at 4 this morning, and just waved at pop as he passed going hunting (didnt see me). OK, to the point now... I get back home about 7 and decide to give him a call to see how his luck panned out. He answered, i could hear frustration in his voice. He did manage to call the bird in, pretty long shot across a slough, but got him. BUT the bird was flopping around and managed to get in the water just a bit. He tried to go around, but way to thick, so he goes back to his truck to try getting a reel and throw a spinner bait and snag the bird. But as he noticed a V coming across the water, he could only scream and thow sticks as a big gator left with his tropy. Man he was mad. My dad ALWAYS gets a bird each year and often gets his limit. This year has been frustrating a bit since there has been a lot of hunting pressure on weekdays on his honeyhole, but he managed to seal the deal on the last day, or so he thought. Sorry for the longwinded story, but I just thought i'd share that this morning...

Sounds like a good thing he didn't go after it himself.

Yeah, going in the water was never an option. We found the gator in that slough last year and he's easily over ten feet long. Personally I wouldnt have been so nice to the gator, and I'll leave it at that. ;)

Man! I feel for you and your dad, bud! I've been hunting hard during the past month trying to fill a tag that has taken me four years to draw and the last day of the shotgun season my suburban breaks down on the interstate!:(:D So I kinda know what you feel. Something always seems to ruin the last day! :(

Now that is a wild story. As the song goes..."if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all...gloom dispair and agony on me".

Believable story down in our neck of the woods though. A few years back I came around the side of a ridge trying to get on a turkey and saw these 2 gators on a sand bar on the edge of the creek below me. Luckily I had my camera with me. ;) The big one's about 12' & the other is about 8'.

Well, they are extremely common these days down here, far from an endangered species anymore in these parts. And a few beavers can really put some size on them, like in Allan's pics there. Just so unlikely that after shooting a bird, he gets airborne for 30 yards and ends up in water. but the shot didnt phase the gator, he just sensed the motion in the water, and got a surprise snack. Pop just had to stand there yelling with an ultralight and beetle spin in hand (gun was in the truck). Hard to get a 10+ foot gator in on 6lb line i bet! But no doubt will go down as one of his most memorable hunts ever.
