johnf
My brother bought a 444Marlin lever action and wanted to know if he could shoot anything else through it.
Heavy Metal
Should say right on the barrel as well as in the manual. My Marlin has 44mag/44spec stamped in the barrel and its also on like the first page of the manual under "loading your gun" I think. If he bought it used, he can download the manual from Marlin's website.
Hoosierbuck
No, there are no generally accepted alternatives. If he is set up to reload, then of course he can do his own lighter loads, etc. HB
johnf
He was really just looking for something that didn't cost $36 a box/20. I'm set up to reload. I'll let him buy the stuf and reload for him.

That's probably the best route John, get him to pick up some dies for it and whatever powder he wants to use and whip up some loads for him, that'll be a lot cheaper than using the factory ammo. Doc
Personally, I would set him down in front of your re-loading bench and teach him the ropes. Once he gets the hang of it, he'll get hooked and want to get his own re-loading outfit, and will come to appreciate another great activity and pastime. Doc He lives 3 hours from me and is not a person that needs to have gunpowder in his house. Bless his heart.
Doc
He lives 3 hours from me and is not a person that needs to have gunpowder in his house. Bless his heart. I'm not sure what the "gunpowder in the house" comment means, but I was taught by my brother-in-law who lives in a different country that is a few days drive away. He showed me the fundamentals in one weekend visit. It really doesn't take that long. Those few hours of instruction and a few e-mail conversations, provided me with quite a few years of shooting that probably would have otherwise been cost-prohibitive. However, if the "gunpowder in the house" comment means what I think it does, perhaps this isn't really the best solution. That's a judgement that you are best suited to assess.......lol. In that case, I completely understand your reluctance to get him into reloading.....lol. That is absolutely not an activity for someone who is not totally dedicated to safety. johnf
Love my brother, not going to hunt, reload, or cut bait with him. If we're going somewhere, I'm drivin'.
