punkinslinger
Woke this a.m. to about 45* and calm air. Told the boy "Today is the day"! We started back a tram road headed for an area where we know there are some jakes hanging out when all the sudden we hear a gobble about 100 yards from us. We had worked this particular bird before and had him in to about 70 yards and he hung on us last week. I ask my son since it was before school if he wanted me to work this boy again or head back in for the jakes? He said let's get him. We no sooner got set up and his next gobble filled the woods and I knew he was on the ground already looking for love. I pulled out my slate and gave him a couple clucks and he went nuts!!!! I only called 2 more times to keep a bearing on him since he was down over a knoll. Next thing I see is the ole white head bobbin over the crest and see the beard. I gave Shane the green light to pound him when he had a chance. Shane had to wait since there was some small trees in the way but once he cleared them his little 870 20 gauge barked and down he went. High 5s and hugs were performed as well as thanking the Good Lord above for such a great hunt and trophy. His bird weighed 16 lbs and sported 14" worth of beard! 8 1/4" & 5 3/4" ..the spurs were 13/16" & 7/8". This is Shanes second spring bird and Dad is proud!! Not bad for a 13 year old. fly
Glad to hear of your success with your son. I would have thought that bird would have weighed more with 2 beards and those near inch spurs? Congratulations!
punkinslinger
The weights are down up here in NE PA where I live. We had alot of snow then ice..then snow then ice. We had over a foot on the ground of that mess all winter. It is a wonder there are any birds around at all. My bird had a 9 5/8" beard and only weighed 16.6.
