woolybear
New or used? What are you hunting?..., and what are you looking to spend?
fly
Have looked into this topic in the past. Decided on a smokepole instead. Something you might find interesting... http://www.gun-tests.com/performance/apr97browning.html
Dakota
A bolt slug gun is extremely specific imho. I'd recommend either a Mossberg, Remington or H&R/NEF slug gun myself. All three should be pretty affordable. Also, you don't need a 12ga. to hunt deer. I know that a 20ga. has more than enough power to knock down that buck of a lifetime. Hoosierbuck
My dad has the Marlin 512. It is not pretty, but it is accurate as heck, and I doubled on does once in about 8 seconds. Hard to pull off with the NEF, but they are supposed to be great shooters. Dad's gun really like Rem. Core-Lokt Ultra bonded slugs. Myself-I mostly used the ML during gun season when slug guns were as good as it got for Indiana. HB
crazyfarmer
H&R ultraslug 20guage;) its a single shot break open action slug gun. Mine shoots well out to 200 yards, but Im only concerned about out to 100 yards. Very affordable but the slugs run about 25bucks a box now(5)
terry264
Roadkill04: If I were looking for a dedicated bolt action slug gun I would consider the new Savage 220F myself. I don't think any of the other companies even bother making one anymore and NEVER made one like this one. The 220F just came out on April 30th. of this year and is built on their 110 action with floating barrel, drilled-tapped for scope, and even has their "accutrigger". Sounds like a real bolt/slug gun to me! Check it out at savagearms.com,,,then drool.

You can get a Mossberg 395kb to launch slugs and turk loads with the accu choke for around $100 if that. A good inexpensive, reliable gun to see where your bolt action shotgun wants to take you. Used of course. If not I have another viable option for you new that shouldn't break the bank either upon request.
Turkeygirl
Mossberg 500 20 ga...smoothbore....all I've ever gun hunted deer with for like 12 years....it puts em down....
MichiganHunter
BOLT ACTION SLUG HUNTER RIGHT HERE both me and my uncle use mossburg slug guns. I use their 695 BOLT ACTION. They arent to hard to find but did have a bolt recall (mine wasn't in the recall). with the correct slugs and scope I am using I have "COMFORTABLY" shot deer out at 170 yards. I love my bolt action. It is the most accurate gun out of any of the 4 on our property. I have shot from a bench at 200 yards and can mark a paper plate, at 100 yards it prints a group at about 1.5in. I use a bushnell scope, and remington copper solids slugs. They dont make that gun any more but you can find some used ones in great condition for at or under $280. just check the recall. but they are an amazing gun. my cuz has a savage bolt action, and i would not recommend it. Its extra long barrel makes it a load to carry and a difficult gun to use on deer drives, its longer barrel has no extra advantage that we have seen in accuracy. The 695 has a ported barrel, and iron sights. I run an over under sighting system so i can use my iron sights for close shots and my scope at longer ranges. It has a heavy barrel and the porting "help" reduce recoil but it still pokes a bit since it is a pretty light gun. so. I guess my recomendation is get a 695 get a good scope, and over and under rings and get to wacking. For the dollar there is NO better weapon. also: if you have any other questions feel free to ask me. on here or pm me Edited May 14, 2009 by MichiganHunter
woolybear
MH, That wa s gonna be my second affordable choice. Although it's never happened to me I 've heard rumors of the clip falling out?? It's a tack driver for sure scoped. Got the raised scope rings on it here as well but have yet to need them other than to sight them at the bag. RangerClay
i dont want a shotgun with a slug barrel. Why do you want a smoothbore? I would want a rifled slug barrel for more accuracy.
turkeydude
Mossberg for me I mainly just bowhunt but once in awhile ill get out the slugs for bear and deer. But I just use my Mossberg 835 Turkey gun but i bought a slug barrel for it and it works great.
WIwhitetailhunter
I have both a 12 and 20 guage Mossberg with slug barrells. Not real expensive and they do the job!! Switch barrells and you are ready for birds!!
00DodgeGuy
Definitely check out the H&R Ultra Slugster.....I have the 12 gauge and it is an absolute tack driver.....at 100 yards you can easily shoot 3" groups.
Buckhunter76
i use my good ole optima black powder 50cal, lol, you can reach out and touch 'em if need be, lol, im not to fond of using slug guns during the deer season, i use 'em during turkey season only, my black powder is alot more accurate, not knocking anyone, and its a lot more safer, my opinion, lol
Tecumseh
I had a Mossberg combo and sold it recently and got a rifled barrel for my encore prohunter.I'm going to try some slugs through it sometime this summer to figure out what it shoots best. Buckhunter76
the reason i said safer, lol, its gets nuts in ohio during gun season, its like a dang war, lmao
00DodgeGuy
I don't know how your gun is any safer......safety is the responsibility of the hunter...please enlighten me how your smokepole is safer than my single-shot slug gun.
unioncountyslayer
Like a few others on here, I hunt with an H&R Ultra Slughunter 12 gauge. It's not bolt-action, but it's built specifically with a fully rifled barrell. I've killed plenty of deer with it in the 100-150 yard range. Great gun, especially for the price. skooba
I use the ol' 870 with a rifled barrel. You can't beat it for the price and reliability. It is also a good gun to take when driving draws and ditches. I have killed several deer with it around 100 yards.
