Ohiobucks
Anyone have one and/or used one? I *might* be in the market. Found the Swishers to be affordable, but have heard mixed feedback on performance. DR Power, AgriFab, Kunz - a little more expensive, might as well get a small tractor with a PTO for those prices..... Any thoughts?
dogdoc
I thought about one for a while---decided on a tractor.
Ultradog
I agree with Dogdoc. You can find something like an 8N Ford with a 5 or 6 foot mower that will suit your needs for under $2K. The thing about a tractor is you can use it for a dozen years and then sell it and get your entire purchase price back. You could probably find a cheaper tractor like an Allis Chalmers B that would do the job but the 3 point hitch on a Ford makes the tractor useful for a variety of other things besides mowing. Tominator
You looking to reduce time on the mower? Just remember these things: Your son is capable of riding around on a mower. The quicker you do your lawn, the quicker you're back in the house listening to your wife nag and children bicker. Sit back, relax and enjoy your lawn while you have it. Ohiobucks
No, not looking to reduce time on the mower at all. I would be looking at the rough cut type pull behind. This would be used a 5-8 times a year on some of the overgrown stuff behind the house, and on a more regular basis for the trails. The more I think about it, the more it is making sense to at least try one.
monsterbucks1
I am going to have to agree with the tractor, serves more purpose and you can get a bigger cut. Also if need be you can always get more attachments.
Tominator
You can probably guess what I'm thinking. I think you need a tractor too. Small utility one like I have. You can mow, bush hog, plow, till, etc. with those things. Someday.

wtnhunt
6K in a little "do all" that is all work and no play? No thanks.... Ummm you must be quoting used prices bud. Just my opinion, but seriously I think it would be a bad investment Tom, unless you will not do much with it. Those pull behinds are not made very heavy at all, they will not last like a medium duty bush hog will doing the same type work. As mentioned too there are lots of other options/uses for tractors. People who own the property next to us had one of those swisher pull behinds, think they gave around a grand for it. Think it lasted them maybe 2 years before it had fallen apart far enough that they ended up getting a finish mower and bush hog.

hungry hunter
Bush hog and small tractor with bucket. They pay for them selfs and you might be able to pick up some small jobs on the side.

Now, there's a couple scenarios here. 1--there's a whole lotta old people on this forum, 2--those old people have learned from experience and are just trying to help a hard headed wannabe kid who won't listen to the advice he asked for or 3--you were looking for a particular answer and didn't get it, so now you're taking it out on your buddy. You're cool. Reminds me of a Blazing Saddles scene: [as the townspeople point guns at Bart, the newly arrived sheriff] Reverend Johnson: Gentlemen, gentlemen, allow not hatred to rule the day. [holds up his Bible] Reverend Johnson: As your spiritual leader, I implore you to pay heed to this good book and what it has to say! [Townspeople shoot the Bible, blowing it apart] Reverend Johnson: [to Bart] Son, you're on your own. ----->
redkneck
I have used them before but it was a yamaha terrapro and had PTO. It worked really good, but of course was intended for really tall grass, not one inch saplings, though it would cut them. Never used one of the self powered pull behinds. QDMAworks4me
I have a swisher and really like it, mine is a 10 horse power because it is an older one. Mine could use a little more horsepower and the newer ones have that. I would suggest trying one they are easy to store compared to a tractor and work great and are easily adjustable. Ohiobucks
So what's your point? What's my point? My point is obvious. Everyone that provided an opinion to this point has never owned one or used one. The voice of experience is what I was initially looking for. I'm looking for an answer to my question from guys that can base it on experience, not opinions. All I got to this point was opinions. That's my point. Texan_Til_I_Die
OK, first hand experience with a pull behind - I had a Bush Hog brand with about a 42 inch cut. It had an 11 HP Honda engine. Engine ran great and the mower cut well until the main pulley/bearing assembly went out on the deck. The cost to replace the pulley/bearing assembly was prohibitively expensive, so it got canned and is now gathering dust in the barn. I may do something with the Honda engine someday. Maybe if you are mowing your yard with it it will last you long enough to get your moneys worth. Guessing if you use one for any kind of brush the swisher brand unless they have made them a whole lot heavier constructed(which I doubt) simply will not last. Ohiobucks
Listen guys, I'm not going to make a big deal out of this. Unless you have owned one and/or used one, you are only providing me with an opinion. Everyone has an opinion about everything. I was/am looking for first hand experience. My original question was, "Anyone have one and/or used one?" So far, 2 people that have responded have actually owned and used one. Thanks anyway. You're not even in the market for a Hoyt, but I think you should buy one anyways......)
