Run for the hills the banner is attacking the text!!!!

Yesterday my patience was tested. I was on the wrong side of the road as a Tom gobbled on the roost. I went over there after a bit and shock gobbled. He gobbled back, so close he startled me! I immediately set up as best I could and started a soft series of purrs with a cluck now and then. Where I sat was so thick it was hard to see anything. It was fine while I was standing. I thought I could hear the bird walking. I am guessing that he saw me before I saw him as he never appeared. I heard a couple of putts, but didn't hear him go. He only gobbled that one time. The rest of the morning was very quiet as I moved here and there to try and get one to sound off or show up.

This morning had me on the right side of the road near where I reset yesterday. The bird gobbled on the roost a bunch of times, but he was much farther up the ridge. I called and waited, but he never showed. I then heard a distant gobble up on the top and decided to get up there as fast as I could with out spooking the whole neighborhood. Quite the hike to say the least. Straight up after a few turns in the road....pant, pant!

I heard him sound off twice more and I realized he was out in the huge planted field. I made my way to the very edge where there were a couple of big logs I could use for cover. I set up and started the clucks and purrs and he sounded off in response! He was very close. He gobbled and he had to be just over the rise of the field before me. The field is one of those types of terrain where a deer or turkey could get from one side to the other and you would never see them depending on where you stood. I watched for a bit and it wasn't long before I saw the gobblers stretched out neck and head just over that rise. He looked all over the place and then gobbled again, desperate for the hen he heard to show herself....He then dropped out of sight. Grabbing my call and striker I struck out a few fast cuts followed by a cluck. I looked and here he comes on the quick looking everywhere. I dropped the call and readied the shotgun as he was coming right to me. He stopped at about 30 yards and turned broadside and started going away. I put the bead to his head and in an instant he was in the dirt. Pop and drop! Hardly a flop! :D He checked in @18 1/2 lbs with a 9 inch beard and 7/8 spurs. This bird had it bad as his wings were pretty well worn from strutting. Not as big as the one I messed up on a few weeks ago, but I am glad this one showed up to let me redeem myself. :)
