fly
Went to the shop to day to have my 03 Bear TRX tuned up. The pro asked if I wanted a new string. I had no idea they could get so expensive! Initially I said no, but started thinking about what could happen if the string broke. This would be my 6th season using it. It didn't look that bad to me, but after I got home I searched the forums and looks like a lot of archers change the string every 1-2 years. Just wondering when you all change you strings? While I was there I shot the new Admiral by Bowtech. It was a shooter alright. Fast, smooth, and no aftershock.

layin on the smackdown
Yep, i don't ever go more than 2 years without changing strings and cables...I also shoot alot outside of the season though...So Fly, I'd say you are due! six seasons might be a Guiness Record! Its alot better to be safe than sorry...you did the right thing.
Hoytguy
I'm still runnin' the original string on my Xtec. All depends on how it's stored and how you take care of them. If you've ever tackled setting your cam sync and draw stop timing on a hybrid cam setup, and your good at it, then string away.
MUDRUNNER
I generally change mine when i start seeing signs of wear from fraying or serving seperation. I've bought my bow strings from Archery Talk. They seem to be a little cheaper than getting them at the bow shop.
wtnhunt
On strings I change mine about every two years or if they start to show wear will change them sooner, cables seem to last a little longer. Both mine and my wifes bows will need new strings soon. The tech who used to do work for us at a bow shop about 40 minutes away no longer works for the shop, guess I will be changing my own this year. Rhino
Getting 6 years out of a string and cables is way more than I'd expect them to last. It depends on how much you practice. If you practice a lot I'd expect to change them out every year or so. I don't recall ever going more than 2 years with a compound bow. Tom2008
Every 1 to 2 years here also. I shoot a lot though so I get a lot of wear and tear on them. The best thing you can do is just keep waxing them. 6 years is an amazing amount of time. If you notice a lot of freying than it is time for a new one. Or if a strand is broken some where. fly
Thanks for the feedback all. I take good care of my bow and wax the string frequently. I've never noticed a broken strand but I have noticed some freying. I shoot a lot in September (maybe 200 shots) then in October and November more like 50 per month. I'd say it had about 1500 shots on it over 5 seasons. Sounds like I did the right thing getting a new one. I'm getting new cables and strings. Actually the pro at the shop suggested I go with "first string" so I did. I've never heard of it, hope it's a good one?
VermontHunter
Actually the pro at the shop suggested I go with "first string" so I did. I've never heard of it, hope it's a good one? I'm using this string and cables this time around , and so far I haven't had any issues with it. I've been shooting about 75 arrows a day for the past few months and I haven't seen a hint of fraying yet .. The grade I'm using is called "First String-FlightWire" The string comes complete with a pre installed two position peep, silencers, and D-Loop .. hoosierhunter
wow I didn't know you were sopposed to change them every year or so. I shot my string on my old bow for 6 seasons. When it frayed I just waxed it:eek:
tedicast
Thanks for the feedback all. I take good care of my bow and wax the string frequently. I'd say it had about 1500 shots on it over 5 seasons. Without exaggerating, there are months where I put over 1500 arrows through my bow. If you aren't having serving seperation, and your bow is staying in spec, there is no need to change strings every 2 years if you take care of them. I have 2 bows, with Vapor Trail strings on them now, that have at least 10,000 shots on them. one set is 2 years old, and one set is 4 years old Edited May 16, 2009 by tedicast

If I only shoot 1000 shots in 3 years should it still be changed? Just wondering when I should change it next time.
Washi
I've been told the old Fast Flight strings should be replaced every three years at the very most no matter what and more often if necessary. The newer 8125 and 452X can go even longer if taken very good care of. This is what I was told by my friend who works at an archery shop.
