woolybear
I got a few pics of some geese at the park wearing leg bands from a few years ago. Letters and numbers clearly marked. Some tagged twice with an orange band and a metal band. Any ideas where I can plug in these codes and find out a little more about these honkers without having to harvest them and send the bands out to......??? Here's a pic Edited May 16, 2009 by woolybear pic added
layin on the smackdown
Try the USFWS... Ive never seen one of those big orange bands on a leg before, usually on the neck...Interesting. When you bag a banded bird, and they send you the certificate, it is from the USFWS, so i would think that you might be able to find out some info there. Let us know. dan

woolybear
I'll check that out and let you know. I've been seeking the answer to this question for years now and have come up with nothing yet. Appreciate the help.
RTF
Cool Pic. It is a little hard to read the metal band.
woolybear
Well I did a little more digging following links from the USFWS site and by the looks of things, there's more information to be found on that orange leg band. I did come across this link though that may have narrowed down a release area some. http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/homepage/cagoprot.htm Anyhow, just thought to kick this topic around a bit, my cams not all that high quality to really get the detail on the metal bands. Let me tell you though that particular park is loaded with banded geese in the fall and has alot of prime hunting propperty surrounding it. May be worth the effort to secure some rights around there for this fall and perhaps string a few on my lanyard. In closing, I'll leave you all with a pic of this ole dude that's been returning for 4 years now. Check out the white dome on him!
Tominator
As noted, the metal band is probably a Fish and Wildlife Service band, but the plastic one might be a local band, like a state agency. I know Ohio places plastic ones like that. Maybe give them a call. The old dude is either a hybrid or leucistic bird. Probably leucistic. camoman1
That is a neat looking goose thats for sure... I would think you could call the local DNR and they could maybe give you some info about where to send them numbers to. I shot a banded drake Redhead a few years back. I sent the number in and they sent me a certificate telling me it was a HEN!! Im hoping maybe a number got scrambled up in translation or something and that all the the rest of the banding info for other birds is correct.
