I am a new hunter or should say hunter want to be. I am a New Yorker and now live in Pennsylvania and want to get started in this exciting sport. I would like to learn how to hunt properly with respect to nature and the animals. If possible I would really like to go out with an experienced hunter to learn how to harvest an animal properly. Hope to hear from anyone with advise.

I'm not sure about the content of PA's hunter safety courses, but if they are anything like NY's, there should be some great info on hunting included in their course. There are also many books and magazines that are a wealth of information. But this forum and others like it are full of members that have gotten the basics under their belt and are more than willing to share what they know. Just ask the questions and you will get all the help you need.

Of course, you are right in trying to get a hunting partner who has a bit of experience. That is the quickest and most thorough way to learn what hunting is all about. Rod and gun clubs can also be another great source of hunting info and may also provide access to some hunters that may want to take on a hunting partner.

At any rate, welcome to the world of hunting. You likely will be starting into an activity that will provide great experiences, challenges and achievements for the rest of your life.

Welcome,What do you want to hunt for?You can learn a lot from this site. You can also learn from hunting shows like the ones on the outdoor channel.Read some hunting magazines. You will also learn from just going out in the woods and hunting.I learned from the many mistakes I have made through the years.Get involved in a sportsmans club, you can meet lots of helpful pepole.Talk to some landowners and try to get some permision to hunt there land.Help the landowners out if they need any.Take a hunters safty class.:) A good hunter is a safe hunter.:) Pratice with your gun or bow.Make sure you are a good shot and your weapon is sited in.You have all summer to shoot and get good at it. Save your money, hunting can be expensive to get started. You need a good gun or bow, warm cloths, good pair of boots. Pa. is a cold state in the winter,You must stay warm or hunting is not so fun.Good luck to you:D.

Welcome to the forums and the wonderfully addictive world of hunting! Best sport there is whithout a doubt.

As the others mentioned I'd encourage you to start with a safety course. Then get used to your equipment (gun, tree stand, safety harness, etc...). Practice marksmanship, then start out hunting something small like squirell. Then when you are comfortable handling a gun/bow in the woods and can hit what you're aiming for look into hunting bigger game. Start gathering information on areas you can hunt. Review maps and hunter access points. Most DNR's will send you maps and other hunting information in the mail free of charge. Be sure you know the rules and regulations regarding the animals and areas you'll be hunting.

Once the bugs and weather cool off, get out there and spend a day or two. Learn to distinguish sign first of all... then learn how to interperate it.

Even in the off season deer leave signs of their existance. It's up to you to put the pieces of the puzzle together to anticipate and nail down the next move they will make as the environment around them changes with the seasons.;)

Ask away man...I love to discuss strategies whether we agree or not.

BTW- welcome to RT!

Safety Course

To all of those who answered I say thank you. First and foremost I have to say that I have already taken the hunter safety course and am comfortable with a rifle. I am getting more experience with a bow, but need more practice. I live in the Poconos area of Pennsylvania, if anyone knows of a hunting/gun club that may be of help to me please let me know. As far as what I am looking to hunt for is what is very common here in PA...white tail deer. Thank you all for your input so far.

Sorry I missed you on the first go round but welcome aboard.

I you have specific questions I encourage you to use the search feature here and do a search on a subject.

If you're interested in deer hunting I'd recommend doing some reading. Here's a link to some books written by James C. Kroll. He's in charge of the Institute for Whitetail Deer Management and Research. I have the first 2 of his books at the top of his site.
