Dakota
Okay, when I started hunting I went straight from the BB gun to the 20 gauge and .243. I never did have a .22 until this past spring when I bought an old .22LR Ranger semi-auto from a buddy of mine. My question is this: how much difference is there between a 37 and 40 grain bullet? I'm not really looking for a plinking round, just a good squirrel/bunny round. Thanks! Dakota
Texan_Til_I_Die
Doubt if the varmints will know the difference. I'd say to treat it like a big game rifle and find out what shoots best. If you're not worried about meat or pelt damage, go with a hollow point.
Dakota
Well, I have a box of Win. Super X 37gr. Hollow Points and a box of Federal (blue box) 40gr. Power Points (I think) and was just wondering. It'll be a little while before I can go out and shoot though. Thanks! Dakota
johnf
3gr. Seriously though, I buy the cheap Remington bulk ammo. It shoots fine. Unless your going to a target competition or shooting squirrels in the eye at 50 yards, whatever goes through your gun well and makes a hole where you aim, that's what you should use. Shaun_300
I know in my semi it's kind of picky what shells it likes. The el cheapo walmart stuff just doesn't cut it, it will not eject them consistently. I personally like the Remington Yellow Jackets and for the powerful rounds I use the CCI Stingers, they are the pretty hot loads for a .22! Only problem with the hyper-velocity .22's is that, on anyhting but a head shot, they will make a mess and waste meat. Somebody makes a flat point .22 LR round specifically for small game. Maybe CCI?? Not sure.

Yeah it sure does, I use it for pests, my cousin's grandparents have a farm that is overrun with chipmunks that get into everything! Boy I tell ya those stingers sure make a mess of them! It'll string those things out from their 5-6 inch length out to a foot or more, leaving not a gut in their carcass!

Ditto, except my Marlin prefers the Remington Thunderbolts for some reason. Off the bench, at 50 yards I can make cloverleafs with that round. Straight Shooter
Ditto, except my Marlin prefers the Remington Thunderbolts for some reason. Off the bench, at 50 yards I can make cloverleafs with that round. Try doing that at 265 yards, Chris? LOL Buddy of mine is shooting a CZ bolt action 22 at 265 yards and hitting CONSISTANTLY ON VIDEO a 4", 6", and 8" steal plate with the American Eagle brand. They work well in a 10/22 as well. As far as which grain to use for small game. Like the others said, I don't think the game will now the difference. Pick out what shoots best out of your rifle.
