Elk vs elks

Elks are a protective group of citizens

elk are wild cervids ( deer)

With big game Deer bear elk they are always referred to inte singular

You don't say you saw 3 deers

but folks tend to says bears & elks esp if they are not hunters.

Depends on road traffic?

A remote trail ?

yes they might

an Interstate highway= Not

I once saw a small pond on the county dirt road used nightly by elk. One big bull had actually dug up the road with his antlers. You could see the grooves from his brows. They spent the day on private land that was unhunted. Elks?:D Must be your first time eh? A better question would be "What kind of horrible beating will I incur pursuing the wapati?" Good luck.

The closest I have ever seen an CO elk wallow to a dirt road was 50 yards. I know of two places like that, one in unit 71 and one in unit 37. Never seen one closer on my years of elk scouting, but it could be possible.

I'll bet though that in PA where the elk herd dates from the 1920's and is burgeoning that there could be a wallow closer to the road in the Keating Mtn country of Clinton and Clearfield counties.

Perhaps too in KY where the elk herd is really outrunning the number of hunters it could be possible with all the land reclaiming they did( thank the good Lord for strip mining ).

Not sure who posted it before me, but they were correct. Elk will wallow next to a road depending on traffic volume, predators, and the amount of water or lack thereof in the higher more solitude elevations.

The funny thing about them is you'll find em where you find em. We have a couple of herds ranging from about 13 head to 125+ no more then 1-4 miles from downtown.

in fact i've seen em calf 3 feet of a major highway, and we even have to play dodge the elk at night in town on occasion.

Some might think this is a bit strange for an animal that typically lives in ankle breaking, crotch busting, knee twisting blowdown out here in the west, but remember that tradtionally they were a plains animal just like the mulies.

The biggest cause for this "strange" behavior here in Montana is definately caused by the high wolf populations that we have. So I hope this helped you some and also hope that you don't mind hearing from a posting newbie. Good luck, and good hunting.
