My dad's buddy owns some great hunting land out that way and he invites me up a few times every season to hunt it.

My buddy smoked a nice gobbler up there this season.
sskybnd
how often do you run the trap lines every other day or every day, and at what time, been reading some on trapperman.com i can figure, most of the sets except the drawning one, if you place the trap at the edge of the water how does the critter drawn, stupid question i know but i dont have a clue how its drawns without being jurked under the water,

There could also be an entanglement which the critter gets tangled in and drowns. Or the traps weight can drown smaller animals like muskrat and mink. They can also exhaust themselves and drown. Just a few ways. lol I've heard there's good hunting around that way.
HunterLuke
Forgot to add sskybnd, here there is a requirement of checking traps atleast once everyday. That regulation can differ from place to place and also depending on what kind of traps you have set.

Yep, it's at least once every two days here for footholds and at least once every three days for conis. Dakota
swamp stalker
Thanks for all your advice guys! I'm new to trapping and didn't realize Duke wasn't a name brand. Here in SD you can trap/hunt coon, fox, coyote, badger, beaver, possum and skunk (why anyone in their right mind would go after a skunk is beyond me ) all year long with no limits, but we can't set traps within 30ft. of water until Nov. 1st when the Muskrat and Mink season starts. So I'm stuck attempting cubby/pocket land sets for coons until November or maybe conibear and bucket sets as well. How likely are you to catch mink in a water coon set? The majority of my trapline will be water sets once November comes around and I have several spots pinpointed on a small winding creek that is fed by a lake and eventually joins up with the Big Sioux River. There is a lot of coon sign on this creek and I'm thinking I might even be able to catch a few mink under a bridge and by a culvert on opposite sides of my trapline. What do y'all think? Dakota Duke is a brand name. They are just made overseas.Their quality control may be off once in a while but they work fine. All traps need to be set and tuned just like a bow or gun. I prefer their body grips over all others because they last longer. I have been in the Beaver Control Biz for 15+ years and started trapping when I was about 14 in the 70s. I would suggest reading some trapping books and watching some videos. Trap tuning and preparation are vital to your success. One more thing a 1-1/2 or 1 3/4 coil spring trap WILL hold coyotes- Note- The KEY is a SHORT chain( 8-12 in.) good swivel and a LONG stake or double stake. Read some books from the pros with a photo of 200+ coyotes in a year. Good luck
Ethan Givan
I trap some as well. Use Victor foothold traps for coyotes. Ive tried some snaring but havnt had much luck with that yet.

Tom Miranda's Professional Water Trapping was also a good DVD too. This fall, when I'm not working or going to school, I'm going to be bowhunting and trapping hard. Ethan Givan
I trapped last year while going to school and wow that was rough. I had to get up every morning at 5:15am and drive to the farm I was trapping, run the line in the dark and most of the time it was freezing cold. Then I had to make it to college by 8:30am:bang: I did this for a month and a half. A trap line OWNS you. But it was a blast and I will be doing it again this year:cool:
Slick Trick
Im new to the forums but not trapping. Trapped for 4 years. Ethan Givan you think 5:15m is harsh try 2:45am. Running on basically adrenaline and coffee. I use anything from conibears to colony traps to footholds. Last year didnt go well. Toooo much rain. Duke and victor are just as equally good. Victor arent really any beefyer in my opinion, still gunna need to weld a base plate and put a swivle on. Im coming up with a crazy idea of combining a conibear and foothold. Got a good friend with a weld shop that i can use and ill experiment on combining them both.
