Chris I'm gonna offer you the advice I was given by a forum member here that I didn't take, and wish I would have. I have since wisened up and did as they said. You can buy a cheap tree stand and end up spending more money replacing it in a year or two. I bought a Wal-Mart knock off climber which was really heavy and hard to use. It lasted about 2 years and cost me a 100$. I was told to buy a summit or equivalent stand but didn't wanna spend the 200+$ on one. Well after trial and error on the stands, I now happily have a summit viper which cost 229$. It's lightweight, easy to use, and easily packable. I don't think you'd be dissappointed, and you'll get years of use on it. Not to mention the comfort that comes with them.

Several factors have to be considered.

1. Will it stay there once in place?

If so then bigger and unfortunately heavier may be better, if not then

lighter and smaller.

2. If you pack it in and out each time how far are you

walking?

If a long way, then go super light (Summit open shot - 14 pounds)

3. If it stays how well do you know the area and is it safe?

If so get a name brand (summit, lone wolf) if you don't

know I'd hate to see you loose a 2-300 dollar stand.

4. Will you bow hunt or gun hunt from it (or both)? If using a gun you may like the bar features, if bow hunting you may not?

i'm not looking for a climber because my stand will be staying in one place and it is a safe area so i'm not too worried about it getting stolen. i dont know anything about lock-ons but i would like some comfort so i am not stiff for my shot. will only be bow hunting out of it in this area. what do u guys think about these stands? 30-06 lock-on and stick combo or a Big Game Stealth ladder stand

I would go with a stand with a sling style seat. They are much more comfortable for an all day sit. Stands with a solid bottom or a bar across the knee will get painful. Also remember to wear a quality safety harness even in a ladder stand. There is a system with a static rope and prussic knot that you can stay attached from the ground up. Take it from someone who broke there back falling from a ladder stand, it's necessary.

This looks like it would be great. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_101540____SearchResults

This is by far the most comfortable hang on stand I've ever used. I've used a lot of them too. I have 3 of these hang-on stands for bowhunting. They aren't cheap but for the amount of time I spend in a stand, comfort is a lot more important than expense. With these you can also get additional cam-lock receiver brackets and use one stand in as many trees as you want with ease.

I also have 5 of thier 20' ladder stands with shooting rails mainly for gunhunting. I just got too spoiled with the comfort of their seats so as my old stands wear out I'm going to these hang-on stands for bowhunting and their 20' ladders for gun hunting. ;)

I have several lock ons, some of them are 10-20 years old, and all of them are very solid stands that I can leave year round and be confident in their stability when I come back. The newest one I have was $59 brand new last year and i think it's made by ameristep, but not sure. It's got a relatively small platform but it's good enough.
