Shaun_300
Got up today and decided that I felt like doing something productive. So I tore down the old steps and railing on the back deck that were pretty rotten. Got some new supplies and built a new set. Turned out not too bad for a mechanic! Now I just have to get all the weeds out from around the whole deck, put up the new lattice work around the perimeter of the deck, stain it all and I'm done. VermontHunter
Are those stringers upside down ??? That last step looks like a real doosey .. Edited May 31, 2009 by VermontHunter
Shaun_300
Are those stringers upside down ??? That lasty step looks like a real doosey .. Yeah it does look pretty high in the pic, it's not that bad. The old steps were so sunk down that the bottom step was sitting right on the ground! I used the old stringers as a template and cut them the same way, but moved them up a bit so that when they settle the bottom one won't be so low. I'm sure a better method is out there, but I'm no carpenter. For the amount of times those steps are actually used they'll work just fine. OJR
Looks good! All you have to do is set the rails on a couple of concrete squares and they won't sink in the ground. When you do, you can cut the bottom off, so it is the same height as the rest of the steps. Easy cure!

wtnhunt
Orlan gave a good tip on using concrete squares. Used them under our steps.
