BowJoe
Not to hijack the thread but one night on duty at the hospital, I got called up to the 3rd floor. I hopped on the elevator and was exiting it just in time to see a little old lady crack one of the male nurses over the head with one of the hospital mugs filled with ice. Even though it's plastic, she sent him to the ground. I rushed over to get the mug from her and she threw it down and squared off with me. (I'm trying not to laugh as I type this.) Me and a few other nurses let her hold onto the guard rail along the wall while we tried to decide what to do. One nurse got a chair and she sat down in it. On the count of 3, we rushed her. Each person grabbed one arm and one leg while the House Charge gave her a shot of Adavan to calm her down. The shot was given and thinking that she would relax, I made the mistake of letting go of the woman's left arm. As soon as I let go, I felt this pop under my chin. THE LITTLE OLD LADY HIT ME WITH AN UPPERCUT!!! Then she started cussing me and said, "There's more where that came from you little ***hole!" Finally her daughter arrived and helped calm her down until the drugs took effect but my Gosh. I explained to the daughter and we both couldn't help but laugh until we both had tears in our eyes. Nut
I once was struck by a little woman(in law)....I did not strike her back or touch anypart of her except when my face was struck by her. (LOL actually it hurt her more than me). When the deputies got there they would not arrest her. They told me that a big guy like me should not have a problem with someone that small. buckee
The concept behind tasers, OC and other less-than-lethal devices are to avoid the use of physical contact or force which oftentimes results in injuries to the person, the officer, or both. In fact, most department's use of force continuum policies require they be employed before the use of physical contact. That is probably why the department is backing the officer. Yep, and if he had of man-handled her trying to get the cuffs on, chances are he'd of hurt her a lot worse. Bones on little old ladies break easy. Plus, the way she was trying to push her way around him, he probably saved her from getting hit by a car.
WIwhitetailhunter
So what have we learned boys and girls? We learned that we should obey orders given by a law enforcement officer no matter how silly we may think the orders are. If we do not, we face the rath of 50,000 volts pulsing through our body rendering us helpless. It's your choice and your choice alone to control the outcome of the situation. Your actions dictate the outcome of a situation.

fly
Fly, you are fairly new around here so just a heads up. Swampy does not like cop bashing theads and usually avoids them. So please do not call him out. I can see why he would avoid cop bashing threads just as I avoid some threads here on the forums. I didn't see this one as a cop bashing thread but if Swampy does then I'm sorry I had no intentions of offending or calling him out on a topic he would rather avoid. I know Swampy took a taser blast some months ago for training purposes and I voiced my concern about him doing so. As I recall he doesn't view it as a significant risk to his heart and he's likely correct for feeling that way. I was just wondering if the womans age might make a difference. hungry hunter
Fly, just a little information for ya buddy, The tazer has 50,000 arcing volts, 5,000 across the body volts, less then 1/2 amp in that. It don't effect the heart, defibulators, at any age, yes we have to go to the Cartoon Network in order to carry it. I have got out of more physical contact just by showing the little red dot. It prevents injury to suspects and officers. The recovery time is 1 to 3 minutes with no side effects. Trust me i weight 220 and am not weak but when ya grab somebody with authority some times things break. And when a person gets sent to the Cartoon Network from Friday night fights they normally don't want it again. Just food for thought. deerslayer2295
Being ex law enforcement, I don't believe that a tazer should have been used in this case. She was definitely wrong in her actions but there were other ways besides using the tazer. She could have been subdued, just because of the size difference between her and the officer. Or the next step should have been pepper spray, that would have stopped her. To me using a tazer is one step away from using lethal force to control the situation. She definitely needed to be arrested for her actions, the officer just chose the wrong method.

Currently this seems like an unresolved issue so I looked at a couple research articles (instead of Google) and it appears scientists believe it to be unresolved as well. From the studies I read dysrhythmias were not produced. However, the human research subjects were healthy and younger individuals. One interesting study examined taser use (50,000 volts) on pigs (it wouldn't be ethical to do this on humans) and found that indeed 50,000 volts caused cardiac capture in most of the pigs. Capture is the same thing as pacing the heart much like pacemakers do. So I'd say it is likely that 50,000 volts would affect the heart in humans, but whether it causes lethal dysrhythmis (especially in populations not studied) is still unresolved. WIwhitetailhunter
I do believe that the side effects of using OC on her could have been far worse than the Tazer. Like was stated earlier, after a minute or so the subject is no longer affected. With OC, you run into the whole "breathing" issue. There is no "clean up" with a Tazer unlike with OC. Having been exposed to both, I would much rather get Tazed 100 times then be sprayed once. Had the officer sprayed her, the debate would have been why he did that and not Taze her. Given the options on non-lethal force, Tazing is the best way to go if you are the one it's being used on. One short ride and it's over (unless you still do not want to cooperate).
