You will know when one you shoulder feels right to you. Best advice I think is to hold and shoulder as many different rifles as you can. Lots of good guns out there. Kind of partial to bolt guns for deer hunting here. Don't think you could go wrong with a browning A bolt, remington 700, savage model 10, winchester model 70, ruger 77, or weatherby vanguard. All about your own preference.

Some questions for you, what do you plan to hunt, and where will you hunt? How much are you looking to spend?

That is what I think also

Agreed about needing more information to make a pertinent recommendation to you, sir. As far as other general brands of hunting rifles, WTNHUNT has named off my personal faves already, but I would add that I have heard really good things about Tikka and Sako, as well.

Please give us additional information and we will give you several different, equally correct, answers to your question! :) (Hunters and gun nuts often have very strong opinions on matters of weapon and caliber, they vary widely, and most have some merit to consider.)

I would also add Steyr to Wthnhunt's list for rifles. First we need to decide what the gun will be used for, whether it's a rifle or shotgun. You need to see which one's feel better to you and how much you're going to spend on the rifle, and optics, because if you can't see it, you can't hit it.

Every once in a while you might find a new gun on clearance around $300, but not likely you are going to find anything decent under $300. Might try and find a stephens/savage bolt rifle.

For deer anything from a .243 up. Personal favorite is the .270.

For that price I would look for a stevens, Mossburg ATR or an NEF/H&R.

I've not shot the Stevens or Mossburg, but have heard good things about them from folks who shoot them. I have several of the H&R guns and all shoot really well. If you know where the bullet is going you really only need one shot.:gun2:

Keep looking around.Go to garage sales,pawn shops,news papers,auctions,visit gunbroker.com or gunsamerica.com Some times you can find a deal, it might take some time but they are out there.I got a mint condition winchester 30-30 100 year anniversary model with a scope at a pawn shop for $300. You need to find out your state law, if you can hunt with rifle or shotgun.

For what youre planning on spending id look into the old Savage 110. You should be able to pick one up scoped and ready to rock for that price.

Cals can vary and it depends on how recoil sensitive you are. Good all around rounds that wont break the shoulder

* .243 (unless youre hunting 200lb + deer) and it doubles as a varmint gun.

* .270

* .280

If youre not worried about a little recoil you can find the 110 in .30-06. All around great round.

The only thing i have to argue with is the comment on the .243. I ve taken elk, black bear, and big mulies with a .243 and they all weighed over 200lbs. It's all in the shot placement folks, don't ever let anyone tell you differnt.

Now as an aside to that my personal favorite and the one i've hunted with the most is an old savage 110 in 30-06. It'll take evrything from varmints to moose and won't break yourshoulder or the bank getting one.
