layin on the smackdown
I am seriously looking at purchasing a ML since i went ahead and applied for my ML tag and i currently don't own one... Here is my dilemma...I am looking at two brands, TC and Knight. I am not looking to spend over $350 (maybe $400) if i absolutely need to. What are your thoughts on these two ML's? Which would you prefer and why? I am also somewhat considering a CVA or possibly even a Traditions...any thoughts on either of these brands? Any and all input is greatly appreciated. lil hunter
Knight is going out of business so you might be able to get some good deals, but you better stock up on the primer disc's before they are gone. Most muzzleloaders these days are pretty high quality. My next one will probably be an Omega.
fly
I can't speak from experience on any of the ones you mentioned. I decided to go with a Remington Genesis this past December at Cabelas (on sale stainless/RT camo for 199.00). It shoots better than any slug gun I've ever shot. I've also shot a knight a few times and it seemed to shoot well. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones you have listed. My guess is they will all be tack drivers out to 150 yards with the right load. I often hear the TC is the best smokepole on the market, but it's a lot more expensive as well. You may want to consider a good scope to go with it. I picked up the Leuopold Ultimate Slam and am very pleased with it. BTW... the scope cost me almost as much as the gun. Mach1
My brother and I both use Traditions. Excellent muzzleloaders.
clrj3514
go for a CVA. these guns are alot cheaper and have less problems than TCs and they kill just as effectively. check out the Kodiak Pro Magnum
92xj
I have hunted with a Knight and CVA and now I hunt with a TC Encore. There is no way I would go back. I love my encore and do not plan to replace it.....ever...... I have the .45 instead of the .50 and do not hisitate to take 200-250 yard shots with it. I am very confident in it and trust it in all situations. It might be out of your price range. I have no idea, I have not priced them in a while. wtnhunt
We have killed quite a few deer with the TC black diamond. Really cannot complain about the gun, has been plenty accurate. My next ml will probably be an Omega with stainless barrel.
bluelund79
I'll plus one for the CVA. I have the Wolf, their bottom line ML, but it is plenty accurate w/ the 1X scope out to 100yds, and where I hunt that is as far as I need it. I hold at 2" groups w/ 250gr bullets and 100gr of powder. RangerClay
IMO this is a great deal and you won't be sorry! http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0064865217008a&navCount=3&podId=0064865&parentId=cat20815&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20815_TGP&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20815&hasJS=true
JimT
I have a Black Diamond and a CVA Kodiak Pro. Am very happy with both, but the edge goes to the CVA for sure. I would not buy the gun unless I got drawn for the permit.
Adjam5
I have used a T/C Thunderhawk for over 15 years and it likes loose powder and heavy lead conical bullets. 2 years ago I picked up a CVA Wolf for $135,all black. I put a $100 Simmons scope on it with T/C Gorilla Grip rings and at 100 yards it loves 150 gr 777 and powerbelt bullets. Inexpensive rig, but lethal and accurate none the less. I would like and Omega or a Bone Collector triumph to add to the collection.
stcif
I bought a Knight Revolution a couple years ago. Sighted it in and loved it (July - warm). Went out hunting the first day and after the end of the hunt I tried to fire it and it wouldn't. I ended up taking my buddies trigger assembly out of his Knight to fire mine. Something wrong with the assembly. Had to order a new one and pay $70.00 which was later refunded when I shipped the defective one back. Worked fine after that until a wet day last season when I fired it five times in one afternoon at four different deer. Here is what I heard every time - pfffttttt. Primer would fire but wouldn't ignite the powder which got wet. I am fairly new to muzzleloading and bought the Revolution as it was advertised as being waterproof. I also liked the looks of it. I actually have a DVD which shows a guy load a knight Revolution, then go under water in a pond. He then comes out of the pond and fires the gun. Must be it is waterproof for a short time. Anyways I learned alot, like taping the end of the barrel and making sure I always carry the breach plug tool with me. My advice, buy a Thompson. I have no faith in my Knight even though the moisture issue was mostly my fault. I have never ownded a gun that was this fussy. My 870 goes bang every time. So does my Remington model 740 and my Diamond Liberty flings the arrow each and every time. Good luck in your choice. Oh, I would also buy one with a stainless barrel as I have never seen a barrel rust as quick as my Revolution's blued barrel. I was using American pioneer powder and cleaned it after firing sessions. Rust set in quick and the barrel is slightly pitted.
VermontHunter
I have to say I'm quite impressed with the TC Triumph the wife bought for me ... CVA also makes a great ML .. Good Luck with the ML purchase .. :gunsmilie::gunsmilie:
deerhunter10
I would seriously look into the CVA Optima. You can get the base Blue/Black for $199 at Cabelas and they are a pretty solid gun. In my opinion they shoot great. Right now at Cabelas, they have the Nickel/Realtree combo with the thumbhole stock for $299 so it might be something you want to check out. hungry hunter
I have owned Traditions, CVA, TC Black Diamond, they are all good. Stay away from all the fancy gagets that you might want on there to look pretty. My favorite is the TC, with a bushnell 3x9x40 on top never had a misfire in any kind of weather. I don't shoot any more then 100 gr of loose powder, with a sabot. excellent accuracy out to 150 yards.
Brad6639
I would take a good hard look at a CVA. I got the Optima magnum (shorter barrel and no barrel fluting) over the Optima pro. I put a 30 dollar tasco scope on it and the cva rings. In 2003 I shot 2 deer with it at close range, and then in 2004 I shot my biggest buck to date, 1 real nice ten pointer at 226 yards (ranged before the shot) and dropped him in his tracks. I paid $210 for the gun, and $30 for the scope and $20 for the rings. I sat next to a TC Encore and this gun out shot it all morning at the range. I shoot 2 triple seven pellets and a tc shockwave sabot although I killed more deer with the TC mag xtp sabots. I have shot somewhere around 10 deer with it and take her out several times a year. The other thing Id mention is in Wi you just have to unprime the gun to have it unloaded legally, so the charge I shot that 10 pointer with was 3 weeks old and had been through several damp and misty mornings and still went bang 3 weeks later! TxStarr
I have a CVA. Will has an TC but he takes my CVA for his backup when he is hunting on Colorado. His buddies that he hunts in CO with have upgraded to TCs but hunted with CVAs for years. I have never shot his ML but I will swear by my CVA. Not that I have killed anything with it (I am still working on getting a good one with my bow before I jump off into ML hunting seriously) but it is a hoot to shoot!!!
