264 Win Mag

Recommended Posts

The good ol 264 Winchester Magnum, I got one I love it wouldn't trade it for the world. I know its not the most popular but neither is my 220 Swift or my 280 Rem. So I guess I like to be different. My question is first who has one and what do yall think of it and 2nd What ammo do you use since it limited to either Remington or the ol Winchester's. I use the Remington Mostly but last year I got some custom made rounds from Nosler and they worked very well. I shoot less than a half inch easy at 100 yards and At about 1 3/4 inch Hi Im good for at least 300 yards. Im new to the whole Forum blog thing but so far i enjoy it it's fun. I'll talk to yall later!

My friend used to have one. He sold it one day when a guy made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Man he regrets that trade to this day. His longest shot was 440 yards with it and dropped a buck in his tracks. It was a real tack driver. :gun2:

btw.... Welcome to the forums!

I had one. It was a model 70 Winchester. Bell and Carlson camo stock and a camo Redfield 3x9 scope. It was one of the few rifles I've owned that shot anything I put through it to the same point of impact. Very accurate rifle also. I gave it to my son before he went into the Marine Corps. He still has it. It's very hard on bullets. They tend to blow up so we reloaded Noslers for it for big game. We used a mild load of 4895 and a 120 grain remington psp bullet at 2850 fps to practice with and shoot varmints. We didn't want to shoot out the barrel with the magnum loads. It's such a good shooter it'll be hard to replace.

To me, the .264 is a love it or hate it deal. My first experience with one was when I cranked a barrel I bought from P & S Sales in Tulsa, into a Czech M 98 action. The barrel was likely an E.R. Shaw and cost me $21.95 plus a couple of bucks for shipping. It shot factory Winchester 100 and 140 grainers like a dream. So I tried some Sierra 140 BT's and couldn't keep them in a paper plate at 100 yards. This was back in the late 1960's when surplus H-4831 was about a dollar a pound. After trying several brands of bullets, including Winchester, I discovered it would drive tacks with a Speer 120. Many groundhogs and a few deer died. Then, it got contemptible and I found 85 gr Sierra hollow points worked well. This only lasted a short while, likely due to the fact I had run a total of at least 2000 rounds down the tube by that time, and as I said, powder was cheap, so I used it. Finally, all it would shoot was 140 Hornadys, and when they started to keyhole, I gave up. About 10 years ago, I had a very competent smith screw in a Douglas barrel. I got out some of the old Hornady 140 bullets, and was rewarded with a group slightly over a half inch. Bought some new stuff and couldn't do any better than a 2 inch group. I discovered that the old slugs were .264 inches behind the crimp mark on the ball, and .260 in front of it. The newer ones were .264 the whole way. Go figure. I got disgusted and had my smith put a Hart barrel on another M 98 action I had, and chamber it in 6.5/06. This rifle shoots very well with Ballistic Tip 120's and doesn't eat as much. The trajectory is pretty good, too. All in all, the .264 is a fantastic cartridge for thin skinned stuff, and I made some shots at extreme ranges that were with the limits of myself and the rifle I had. You gotta watch when handloading. There is a point where the pressures go off the charts, and it is very peculiar to the individual gun. I would encourage any serious shooter to try one, especially if you handload. The rewards can be super. uncle john

Hey, I'm here finally. Yeah I have one and love it. It shoots the 140 GameKing ahead of a max. load of H-4831 great. So yes I do handload for it, it's never had a factory load through it. Once shot longways clear through an adult doe deer at around 50 yds., entered right at the right hind quarter and exited the left front quarter, hit the leg joint and finally stopped it. Had 66 grs. left of the bullet so I don't think penetration is any problem. Quite a mess inside though, looked like it swallowed a stick of dynamite, haha. Mod. 70 with 26 in. Douglas, installed by Melvin Forbes around 1979. Still like new. Last deer I shot with it was just shy of 400 yds.=no problem.

my only problem is i hunt elk every year. I would think that it would be to light for elk. possibly with 140gr bullets i would try it but ill stick with my 300wsm for elk and 270 for deer. maybe some day ill have one for the heck of it.

I must agree it would be to light for an Elk but I to have a good ol 300 Weatherby Magnum
