Guest RJK
If you use a hang on tree stand do you prefer screw-in steps or climbing sticks? I used screw-in steps for two years and recently bought some River's Edge 15' climbing sticks and I have to say those sticks are awful nice. Chrud
Re: Climbing sticks Summit Swiftree is the only way to go. Most places sell them for $60 or so. You can get them from Natchez Shooters Supplies for around $40.
Swamphunter
Re: Climbing sticks Climbing sticks are a bit more cumbersome and noisy, but very nice. I use them on all my hang on stands now. Will never use the steps again!
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Climbing sticks I've converted most of my chain on locations to the sticks. They are absolutely awesome! I get 20 footers at our Rural King store for like $45 each. Pretty good deal. To go 20 foot up with screw in steps would take me about 18 steps. At $2.50 each, that's the same price as the sticks. The sticks are just so much easier to put up (I leave them up) and safer to climb, IMO.
bowhtr1
Re: Climbing sticks I made my own climbing sticks. I have 4 sets at 25 ft and one set at 20 ft. The ones I make are a great design. I can put two set together and get 50 ft if I want and you are just as safe at the 20 ft. I do wear fall protection. I have screw in steps also but never use them anymore.
mathews4life
Re: Climbing sticks I just purchased two sets of Ameristep Non typical Rapid Rails and absolutely love them. Easy set up and VERY solid..u can take the strap off and they remain stuck to the tree. I recommend them to anyone.

longislandhunter
Re: Climbing sticks On public land I use the climbing sticks since it doesn't damage the tree. I like the sticks and it works very well, but I dont like having to carry it into the woods. On private land I usually put up 5 or 6 stands in different locations before the season that I leave up all season. On these I install the tree steps and remove the bottom 4 steps to keep unwanted guests out of my stand. I keep 4 steps in my pack, that way when I enter the woods I can hunt any one of the stands I want. Of course if another hunter happens to also have some steps in his pack he could use them to reach my stand, but I've never run into that problem in all these years. longislandhunter
Re: Climbing sticks NYbowhuntr,,,, when you remove the bottom 4 steps simply take a small twig and stick it into each screw hole,,, this makes it very easy to find the screw hole in the early morning darkness so you can screw the steps back in for your climb. Strut10
Re: Climbing sticks Climbing sticks are great as long as you don't have to carry them too far. All my hunting is done on family ground. So I haul the climbing sticks in before season in the Jeep and they stay up all season. If you have to carry them very far, use a couple bungie cords to bind the sections together tightly. They carry a lot easier and quieter that way. ruttinbuc
Re: Climbing sticks I use both. I have used screw in steps for some time, but have incorporated the use of Lone Wolf climbing sticks. Different situations call for different measures. I put out more than a few fixed position stands. Most have five to eight screw-ins starting at 10 to 12 feet that stay in the tree during the season. I only carry and use two of the climbing sticks to get to that point. I'll use all three sticks if I need to change my set ups. The Lone Wolf sticks are a little pricey, but after using them a few times they pay for themselves by their ease of use.
