Farve to Vikings

I guess I just dont see why this is a big deal....? Bear with me here, if Favre would have a been a free agent after the 2007 season and not resigned, then went to the Vikings, Bears or Lions, that would have been ok with everyone?? Some how I think we would be having this same discussion.

No, we wouldn't be having the same discussion. Hence the reason we didn't have this discussion when Sharper and Longwell left in free agency to Minnesota. Joining a rival in free agency and joining a rival after two retirements and doing it to stick it to your former team is not the same thing.

I'm going to the Vikings/Packers game at Lambeau this year. I sure hope Brett does play for them so our DB's can get about 5 pick 6's off of him. I wouldn't mind Bj Raji laying the smack down on him either.

I plan on booing him when he runs out of the tunnel.

Gotta like that! Any INT returned for a TD will put Lambeau into an out-of-control frenzy.

I did hear something on 540 ESPN Milwaukee a week or so ago. LeRoy Butler (former Packers Safety) said now we'll see the real Brent Favre, and we're not going to like him.

You forgot the part where that QB retired and then decided to play 5 months later, after the team had already made changes for the future.

They didn't go there after two retirements and to stick it to Green Bay. There were in the prime of their careers and were free agents that were not signed by GB.

Chrud, there is one huge thing you are forgetting though. Brett Favre was the face of the modern day Green Bay Packers. The man pretty much single handedly turned the team around. Before he did they couldn't get squat for free agents to even consider signing in GB,of course TT has screwed that up now. If you think TT and the GB front office didn't run Brett out you are very misinformed.

Can't argue with that.

The man pretty much single handedly turned the team around.

Are you serious? Reggie White, Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren had more to do with the Green Bay turn around than Brent Favruh. The '96 defense was incredible. Without that defense, good 'ol Brent would have ZERO Super Bowl rings.

Before he did they couldn't get squat for free agents to even consider signing in GB,of course TT has screwed that up now.

So, drafting Rodgers and Jennings was a big screw up by TT? Sounds like you are still blinded by Brent.

If you think TT and the GB front office didn't run Brett out you are very misinformed.

So you have some inside information on this or what? Until something else is said, I'll believe what was actually reported as happened. Brent retired and GB moved on with A-Rod. The rest is history.

Call me a homer if you like, but I will always root for my home team rather than some selfish DB.

I can't beleive how many backstabbing Packer fans ther are. Brett was the greatest ever but now all you do is stick the knife in.

Saying that GB ran him out of town is a little backstabbing I would say.

I hope you get yourself a purple and gold #4 shirt and wear it with pride.

Dont worry, Im with you and camoman. But some people are not happy unless they have something to whine and complain about. What really makes me angry is how people are so quick to turn on a guy. The man is one of, if not the greatest, player to ever walk onto Lambeau field and everyone is so quick to cast him out. I have said it before, I dont agree with how he has gone about this. He should have been straight forward with everyone but that is Bretts way.

No one player is bigger than an organization but when you have a player that has been the face of your franchise for 16 years, who has lead you to championships and Super Bowls, who alters his contract so he can stay and the team can bring other players in, he deserves to be treated as such. He deserves to be treated with respect. Now from what I have heard from people I know who work within the organization and friends who have friends who work there, the forced an answer out of him. TT and MM wanted to know right then and there what he was doing, and at that point Brett was leaning towards retirement. They did not have the respect for him to wait for him to make up his mind. I when you did as much for a team as Brett did, I think you deserve at least that much

Now I never have been a TT fan and I never will be. People talk about how Brett is in the wrong here. Remember how he was treated when he wanted to come back. First they tried to pay him off. Then they said he would be the back up, with no chance to compete for the starting job. Then he asked for his release so he could go play where he wanted but TT said no. So if hes not good enough to be the starter then what does it matter where he gets to go play. It shouldnt but apparently old Ted was scared of what would happen if he went to the Vikings. That is not being disrespectful, that is just plain being a coward. I think that, more than anything, is what bothers Brett the most. So before those of you who say that the organization did nothing wrong, think about that. Its not about a player being bigger than a team, its about treating a player who has given his whole career to a single team a little respect.

Up until last season, I had never known another quarterback for the Packers. I am able to look past all of this and see Brett for what he did to help a team who hadnt seen a championship in 30 years; and for who he was, the same guy who from his first touchdown pass to his last, act like a kid playing football in the back yard, the man who always gave us hope for a comeback, the guy who tosses snowballs at his teammates in a playoff game, No. 4. I will always remember Brett for what he did for the packers and not for his mistakes. Everyone looks for the bad in people no matter how much good they have done. You all call yourself Packer fans but you so easily forget what Brett meant to that team and are so quick to throw him under the bus. Like I said, I dont believe Brett has gone about this the right way but I forgive him because I believe everyone is allowed to make the choices they want in life and even though I may not agree with them, I certainly respect them.

He will always be an icon QB. Both Brett and the 3 stooges in 1265 Lombardi could have handled things much differently to avoid this. Things clearly have not been good between Brett and Ted Thompson for quite a while, well before Brett's "retirement". It is a big let down when you are both a Packer Fan and a Brett Favre Fan. The reason it sucks for many of us is because The Green Bay Packers stand for the things that the big franchises don't. It is publicly owned, run by a large board of directors, and is an intregal part of the community. Brett fit well into the "normal" mode for the most part. So when this all went down, the black eye was felt all the way around. It isn't easy to explain. The disappointment is the worst I think, but an apology for being a fan will never happen!!!!:nono:

Bottomline, Favre put them in a position in which they were forced to put their foot down, and rightly so. I give Thompson a TON of credit. He had to know that the Favre minions (like the dudes with shrines in their home **cough** Finn **cough**:)) would lash out and blame him- but he made the tough call and did what was right for the team (and, ironically enough what was right for the same people who rip him:hammer1:).

Hey DB....that wasn't my shrine....and it's gone. ;)

BTW....AJ Hawk is a HUGE underachiever!

I'm with Chrud on this one....100%

Of course, we don't know the whole story from both sides, and never will. But people must understand the organization had to know what Favre was gonna do before the draft. I'm sure they asked him for a decision. They'd be idiots to go into the draft not knowing what Brett's plan was.

Then, after planning all those months, Brett is ticked cause they won't give him the starting spot without competing with Rodgers. And, Rodgers played on heck of a season last year. Our defense sucked!

Have a great Friday.....it's Fish Fry night in Wisconsin

I think we may be putting a little bit too much into the whole ' they needed to know before the draft thing' ....Whether they knew or not if he was going to play in GB for the 2008 season, he aint gonna play forever...if there was a good QB available in the draft, they should have taken him with or without Brett on the roster.

TT has said before, he doesnt draft based on needs or wants....he also said that they didnt even need to draft a backup for Rodgers....doesnt seem like they had much intention of drafting another QB no matter what Favre decided. Heres an interview with TT, listen or scroll down and read it...http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2008/04/21/1/

And I can guarantee you that TT did NOT want #4 as a backup. Can you imagine Packer fans in the situation that GB has a poor season or even a bad game and Favre is riding the pine....there would be chaos...hence they choose to try to pay him to stay away..

Yep, great points there buddy!!

Sure was disappointing the way both sides handled it.

I heard that he has been working out with the Hattiesburg High School football team, just to see how his shoulder feels.

After practice he gave the team a great motivational speech. He talked about the value of not quitting..............then he talked about quitting...............then he talked about not quitting .........and then he talked about quitting.

After practice was over he took the whole team to the WAFFLE HOUSE for lunch, and gave each member a new pair of autographed FLIP-FLOPS. The next day he couldn't practice, so he just SAT ON THE FENCE and watched.

I'm with ya Churd on this one, you're not alone on this. I see this becoming a fight between Brett Favre fans and Green Bay fans.

Being a Green Bay fan for 40+ years I have seen the good and the bad. And what Brett has done is just plain bad. Some of us who are Green Bay fans have trouble watching the antics that Brett has put the Packers through because we believe in team players. Brett reeeeally needs to get over this complex about sticking it to the Packer franchise, it's really scary. I feel bad for the Jets. Brett used them like a piece of toilet paper. Simply a stepping stone to get to Minn.

I could care less where Brett plays. He will be a memory to me of the better times in Green Bay until he weirded out. I will continue to wear my green and gold on game day just like the other legions of Green Bay fans. In fact I will be wearing a Reggie White jersey, a guy who was truely a class act and would never have acted like this. I will be curious if you die hard Brett fans will be watching the Green Bay Game or the Vikings game on opening day. Remember Packer football is MORE than just Brett, it's a way of life. Yankee Stadium is called the house that Ruth built. Remember Brett fans, Lambeau is NOT the house that Brett Built. And when we get another great quarterback who helps us get to another Super Bowl, Brett will be just a bad memory.

One day I hope I can come visit Lambeau and see the sights before I pass on. I will not have my picture taken in front of Bretts statue. I'm done rambling on except for one more thing. An apology shot to Muggs.

  • 3 weeks later...

Brett is a great quarterback, I always hated when he played against the Vikings. However he is better than any quarterback we have and would help us a lot. When he went to NY I always thought he should of retired and kept his legacy in Green Bay. But now that he is considering Minnesota I am glad he wants to play again. We will hopefully know in two weeks.

Be careful what you wish for. This is going to end badly for everyone except Packers fans who'll enjoy watching him fail- which he is going to do.

Even in his prime the guy was a liability with the amount of INTs he'd throw, but now at his age, with all the hype surrounding this signing and a surgically repaired arm on top of it...I don't see this going well for the Vikings.

And lets say this prediction is right, and he's playing terrible and costing the Vikings games like he cost the Jets games...what can they do, bench him? After all this, that won't happen so they'll be stuck with him at the helm.

BTW....AJ Hawk is a HUGE underachiever!

Huh?:o He started all 16 games as a rookie, and all 16 games the next two years. Guy's got 310 tackles in 32 games, 227 of them solo, 7.5 sacks and 3 INTs all while switching positions...and that's underachieving? Come on Craig.

Let's play GM. I'll trade you Kamerion Wimbley for him. Now that is under acheiving. Straight up.:):laser:

You are exactly right. I'm sure Vikings fans will be pretty excited and all googly-eyed for Brent when he shows up. Just wait for the first 4 INT game and when his bad decisions cost your team some wins. And getting this old duffer, even if he ends up sticking around for a couple years, will be a huge set back for the organization. Minnesota thinks Brent will be a fix for their QB issue. His a band-aid. A band-aid that will come undone as the year goes on.

I agree, sort of. AJ is a great OLB. However, after the first couple games he played at ILB, he looked lost. I'm sure it is a difficult switch, especially in the middle of the season. This biggest downside to AJ is that he seems to miss a lot of tackles. He tries to go for the legs/feet on a lot of tackles, which ends up with the runner making him miss or breaking free. I think AJ will be a very solid LB for several more years for GB.

That's pretty surprising because he didn't miss many with the Buckeyes but the NFL is a different game, that's for sure. He should be coming into his prime now, we'll see what happens the next few years.

I do agree that he hasn't been the monster I thought he'd be, but he's a solid LB. Maybe not worth the 5th pick but definitley 1st rounder production to this point.

AJ has never really been the big hitter I thought he'd be. He makes some big plays, but he has never really lit anyone up (hoping there is a purple #4 he'll light up this year).

I'm guessing AJ will be moved to one of the MLB's in the new 3-4 scheme. I think the move should work well. He's never really been a star when in a blitz, but he's a very good coverage linebacker. For what it's worth, I think Clay Matthews will be quite a bit like AJ Hawk in a couple years.

He's not really a pass rusher, never really has been. He just has a nose for the ball and honestly, the guy was in on almost every play for the Buckeyes. Seriously, he was always right there. If he wasn't making the tackle he was at least in the mix. He's a much better fit at MLB.

I guess I get why they moved him, since they had Barnett there and since AJ has the speed to play OLB in the NFL but he's not going to be a rush specialist there, like James Harrison or someone like that. MLB should be a good fit. With all the Packer linebackers moving to a 3/4 is smart. McCarthy's a great coach, not many would change their philosophy.

I watched Crennel try to fit a square peg into a round hole for years as he tried to make his 3/4 work without the talent. Good coaches adjust.

Muggs, you make a few good points. He is still better than T-Jack though, but who isn't? If they didn't brake your heart, they wouldn't be the Vikings.
