lil hunter
On my 17hmr hornady V-max bullets, all the tips have a different color. Some are bright red, and some are all the way down to a darker brown. Why is this? I don't think it affects the accuracy any, i'm just wondering why they are all a different color.Anyone know? JimT
Re: different colored tips?? I would think they would be consistant. Maybe they were from different batches or something???
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: different colored tips?? Most of the time they have a diff. colored tip for diff bullets.
snapper
Re: different colored tips?? I could be wrong...but I think the different colors are different weights of bullets (grains)?
wtnhunt
Re: different colored tips?? In assuming you are talking about bullets out of the same box, maybe in production something happened with the coloring of the bullets? From red to dark brown, is not that big a difference in coloration.
AJ
Re: different colored tips?? With Nosler, different colors depict different calibers. All .224" bullets are orange, .243" bullets are purple, .257" bullets are blue, and so on. Hornady does not distinguish the different calibers of the V-Max bullet. All have basically a red tip. I would guess you just got a batch of ammo that had the polymer tips that came from either some that had a lot of sunlight exposure or they came from different lots. Your ammo may have been at the end of one lot and the beginning of another? Who knows? You can always contact Hornady and ask them.
wtnhunt
Re: different colored tips?? I used to work in a factory where we dealt with some materials and using color chips for color coding purposes. You could get a pretty broad variance in any of the colors based on how well the materials got mixed. Would assume it would be the same with the tips. JimT
Re: different colored tips?? Usually, different tips mean different bullets. But in this case I think it is mixed batches or there is no color code for those...?
lil hunter
Re: different colored tips?? Hmm. I bought 2 boxes, both have all different colors. I'm really not too cocerned about it, just wondering why. All the pics of the v-max bullet that I have seen have the bright red tip.
wtnhunt
Re: different colored tips?? lil, would not worry about it. Like I said before, discolorations of plastics or rubber or similar compounds such as the polymer tips can have shade variances. Bet when it was mixed though that whatever they use for a color, be it a chip or whatever that it did not get mixed real well in that particular batch. spyderpancake
Re: different colored tips?? currently the only .17 hmr bullets being distributed are .17 and .20 grain. I have had the same experience with the Remington, which use a V-max too.
