LifeNRA
Personally I don't think it is right for you to go on the internet and bash two LEO's when they cannot defend themselves or tell their side of the story. For all we know you could be lying. Why don't you withdraw this thread. :ban: I agree.
fort_peck_reservation_indi
i know the kemp clan and i think they are a good family. i just think everyone got off base on this thread with alot of stereotyping about LEO and Natives. (no harm no foul) i also know that the LEO profession is a very stressing and time consuming job. i know that LEO's have to make split second/life altering decisions and they have to live with those decisions for the rest of their lives..........and lawyers get the "luxory" to scrutinize and analyze these split second/life altering decions for years upon years. (however folks, it seems that some of us on this thread appear to be playing the part of the latter :clown:) but yes!! all of us have the right to our own opinion.... furthermore, i have lived that life as an LEO for many years and continue to do so. however, those split second/life altering decions are only made properly through many, many years of training and experience, (these attributes are not given to you when you recieve your badge and gun the first day on the job.) so i feel that some of us with a lack of knowledge and/or experience need to do a lil research before posting items on threads about certain subjects because it is obvious that a majority of items posted about Natives and LEO were posted out of conjecture or stereotyping. this inturn has appeared to have created a lil hostility in this website. This doesn't mean it can't be corrected though..... so if you do have any questions regarding my resevation or northeastern montana, from history to its people to our laws please feel free to ask.... i have been welcomed to your realtree forum and i thank you for your hospitality. i would also like to return the favor and welcome all of you new LEO's to our profession!! good luck and stay safe! Painted Horse
There was an article published in our small Tribal paper, but it is not available on line. There was some misinformation published in the article that will be addressed in the next issue. One was a quotes from the Tribal game warden. The reporter said the Tribal game warden looked at the photo and estimated the fawn to be about five months old. When was the last time you heard of a fawn being born in January! The other thing that was wrong was the location the fawn was found. The article said it was found north of town. The fawn was found smack dab in the middle of a residential area. These areas of misinformation are being corrected in the next issue. As for bashing the officers, these two officers are good guys, I work with them often. I don't agree with what they did or how they handled it and am good enough friends with them that I have no problem telling them that. I will say this from reading all the responses to the original post, most of you responding to the issue of Tribal jursidiciton had no idea how powerful Tribal government is or can be. I found it entertaining to read your opinions . I retired as Chief of Police for a non-Tribal government on the reservation in 2003, and am currently employeed as a county law enforcement officer on the reservation. There are four jurisdictional areas of enforcement here, tribal, local, state, and federal. Needless to say, things get pretty complex around here. The average patrol officer almost needs a law degree to sort it all out sometimes. It makes us laugh when people from the outside world start telling if they were King, how it would be. In closing, if I have one word of advise for some of you it be would this. You have a right to question authority and should do so respectfully. If we follow those in power blindly, without question when needed, we will find ourselves hunting with rocks and sticks.
GWSmith
If anyone I should apologize for not posting this link sooner. It should have been my first response instead I definitely did a knee jerk. I should have posted this link to help someone who seems to be at a loss in knowledge on generally accepted proper internet forum behaviour. Had I done so in the first place I would not have contributed wood to this flame war. If this link and the highlighted sentence below had been posted it may have helped instead. I apoligize for not doing so in the first place. Here is the link and paragraph on Internet Etiquette: http://www.kidsdomain.com/brain/computer/surfing/netiquette_kids.html Things to remember when participating in a discussion group: Before asking or responding in a newsgroup, take the time to feel the group out Stick to the topic of the discussion group When quoting someone, use only the portion of the quote that is absolutely necessary Avoid "flame wars" Don't send personal messages to an entire newsgroup, use e-mail IMHO if the original poster had taken this step first there could have been a better understanding on his part. In particular how the group of people who frequent this forum and their feelings toward the Law Enforcement community. Though in this statement it is just my perception there is a group of people here that do not tolerate verbal bashing of law enforcement officers. It's taken as a lack of respect for a job that for the most part goes on thanklessly by the people who are protected by it. Again...in my opinion: The article posted in the original post was Inflammatory to the group of people who I spoke about earlier who frequent this forum. It was "One Sided" with there being no further ability to verify it independently. As this article was posted by someone who has never contributed to the forum before it results in people viewing it as nothing but slander. If someone comes into what you consider to be "Your House" and you perceive them to be disrespectful(because they have not taken the time to get to know the group or they simply did not care)...do you say "Do Whatever You Want To My Family"? P.S. It is also considered proper etiquette to post a link to articles so they can be verified and not taken as simple and outright slander. The_Kat
I don't like people who think they are above the law. And FYI smart guy I am indian myself. Your story has little merit, your reservation you speak so highly of has spoken AGAINST you.

snapper
I really don't see what the point of this thread is? If the officers were wrong...whats going to change by posting it here? If they were right...whats going to change? If this was a long time member posting this for a vent...we could understand. But a new member signing up and making his very first post like this...I'm kinda lost at what the point of it is? What do you want to gain outta letting us know this story?
