Doggy help

All right boys and girls I need your help/opinions.

I think I finally have my better half talked into a new family member. We have talked and I know that we don't want a big dog, anything over 40lbs. We also want one that is good with kids, we have 7 & 4 year old daughters. My wife is home 2 days a week. Walks and play time are planned daily. Also we would like one that doesn't drop a full sized dog, in hair everyday. No high maintance dogs like those fluffy floor mops you see on TV. I have a few breeds in mind that I like but want to hear about your pups.

So let me know about your furry friends and what you like and don't like abou them.

For us there is nothing like a dachshund. Ours loves kids and other dogs, is smart as a whip and so loving.

Our little dog (19 lbs) is a cross, so her hair does shed but a purebred dachshund does not.

They have a great nose and can be trained to be trackers.

Ours has just enough energy to make playtime enjoyable but not over the top with bouncing around all day.

She can catch a ball and throw one too and you've all endured the videos of her closing the door. She does that (half the time) now without any prompting.

They are cute, cuddly and protective too.

They can be somewhat barky but a collar has pretty much fixed that problem.

We'd easily get another one.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll have fun with whatever you choose.

While I was in high school my parents got a Border Collie. She still is a great dog now that she is almost 12 years old. When she was younger she was energetic and had a great personallity with my younger brother and sister who were about the age of your kids when we got her. She only got to be about 35 pounds and didn't shed that much. Good luck with finding a new family member. :)

We have a Yokshire Terrier/Poodle mix. In the past 2 years she has grown on me. Bought her for my wife since I work alot of hours. She is 13 punds soaking wet, good watch dog, excellent with my 4 yr old and 4 month old, and good around other dogs, including larger ones. No shedding, easily potty trained. Whatever you all decide, do not go to a pet shop and buy one, that cost me an extra 500 bucks in vet bills. Good luck in your search.

I adopted a Beagle from a rescue back in 2002 and currently have another adopted dog from a shelter a beagle/blue tick hound mix.

I loved the first one and the second one is melting hearts quickly around here.

As far as them not shedding....??????

7 years of personal experience with Beagles...they do shed much more than a Doberman I had in the past and it was 5 times bigger!

People...theres a good reason there is a cover on this chair and it aint because the dog had some occasional horrific flatulence...LOL

My Beagle was right around 22-24lbs which was perfect for inside. The Beagle/Blue Tick Mix is 44lbs....almost too big for an inside dog.

I would recommend going by a local shelter(without the kids) and taking a look at whats availible. Give yourself some time to make the best decision possible.

Saw where Steve B suggested a pit bull jokingly, all joking aside they do make great pets, very loving and protective dogs with kids.

Pit bulls make excellent pets. They are one of the best family dogs out there. It's to bad that jack-hole owners gave them a bad name.

Sorry but I don't find the original post about Pit bulls funny at all.

Just a couple weeks ago my brother's Dashund jumped off a chair and broke her back. She had to be put to sleep. It was very traumatic for the kids. It's true they are susceptable to that kind of injury.

They still have another Dashund, and my brother uses her as his tracking dog when he's bowhunting. That little dog flat can find a deer.
