stevebeilgard
my grandson kaeden was watching a little rabbit in some 18" tall grass when a snake bit him. it was a 3' rattlesnake that was shedding it's skin and didn't have any rattles. when randy oitker was out here a couple years ago we found one and he shot it. again with no rattles. anyway, the snake must have been watching the same rabbit. although he bit hard, it didn't release any venom. so the lucky little kid didn't have to take the anti venom and is just a bit shaken up today. no probles and the marks are healing nicely. he did learn not to go in deep grass with shorts on. things we've told him:hammer1: before. bet he doesn't do tat again.:cowboy:
oldksnarc
He's lucky. I've heard the little ones can have more venom than the adults. Personally, the venom wouldn't have hurt me as much as the heart attack would have.

wtnhunt
Sorry to hear he got bit Steve. Very lucky the snake did not inject any venom. Hope the bite wounds heal up quickly for him. Imagine those rattlesnakes without rattles still shake their tails but where you are no way to hear them, have had both water moccasins and copperheads here give me early warnings with their tails vibrating in the leaves. woolybear
Man, glad the boys ok. Sure that was a scary moment for you all. What's up with your rattleless rattlers? Normaly they grow a new one every time they shed. My guess is a 3 footer has shed a few times already.

stevebeilgard
Man, glad the boys ok. Sure that was a scary moment for you all. What's up with your rattleless rattlers? Normaly they grow a new one every time they shed. My guess is a 3 footer has shed a few times already. lots of times, cattle will step on rattles and take them off. or, others will cut off rattles and let the snake go. i just kill them for the rattles. most likely, though, is that he just molted. it will take a week or 2 before they get their rattles back. GWSmith
Wow talk about something that could have gone wrong really fast especially for a young kid...glad he's going to be OK!!! Shedding his skin he could not see...he made the strike out of a built-in defense mechanism to protect himself when he's vulnerable like that. Likely that he could smell the Rabbit but he could not see it.
redkneck
Wow! Talk about lucky! A cottonmouth did my dad the same way. Usually rattlesnakes are known to be a bit more calculating in thier strikes and venom delivery though. Glad he's ok.
