TCO
So I am trying to decide if I should get a new stock and barrel for my 10/22 or get a .17. Here are my options I am looking at: A) Get a thumbhole stock and heavy barrel for my current 10/22- Pros- Cheaper, already have a scope, clips, ect, CONS- Really none to be honest, B ) My local Scheels has a used 10/22 for around $140, buy that and buy a thumbhole stock and barrel for it, PROS- I would have 2 guns, one for beating around in the woods and one for target/ long shots, CONS- Cost more, need to buy another scope, C) Scheels also has a deal on a .17 HMR, I can't for the life of me remember what model it is but I believe it is a savage of some sort, It has a thumhole stock, heavy barrel and scope for $550. PROS- A little more power from the .17, once again, 2 guns, CONS- $$$ Anyone have any thoughts on the issue? Thanks
hutchies
.22 is a great caliber for plinking.............I wish the .17HMR rounds were cheaper. I love my .17 but the price of ammo will eat you up..........However when I can hit a dime at 100 yards it's hard to take the .22 out to hunt. redkneck
When in doubt, get another gun! http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=106981
Heavy Metal
RHETORICAL QUESTION FARLEY!!! Get the .17! Seems silly to have two 10/22's even with the upgrades and differences.
TCO
I just got around to looking at the most recent Cabelas ad and they have a Savage .17 with the heavy barrel and scope for $300 dollars. I am not sure of what model it is but it looks like a good deal to me.
redkneck
Well, im always looking for an excuse to get another gun. Get the 17 brutha, and you wont look back.........until they come out with the .18 ........then find an excuse to buy that one too.
Strut10
Keep your 10/22 as-is. Then watch GunBroker for a real nice Remington 591 or 592 (like this one http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=132138498) and forget the .17 HMR. Just a thought. TCO
I am really leaning towards the .17 from Cabelas. By the time I would buy a new stock and barrel for my .22 I would be spending more than the new gun.
redkneck
I can't speak for Strut's 5mm, but I know the guy knows his stuff. What I do know is that I would not put good money into a 10/22. Or at least not as much as your talking. I've got a bolt, an auto, and lever and wouldnt think of getting a stock for one, not even my .22 mag. Only reason for a thumb hole is for better hand grip, and what's the point on a .22? Unless you just want something that looks cool, in which case go for it. They have made a believer out of me. Terminal performance on all sorts of vermin is from exceptional to jaw-dropping, considering this is "just a little rimfire". If you're used to a 22 LR, you will be quite surprised that all rimfires are not just like that. Here's a pretty informative article comparing the 17 HMR, 22 RF Mag and 5mm RRM. It's a bit outdated in that it makes no mention of the new 5mm loading by Centurion of a 30 gr. bullet at 2400 fps. and just under 400 ft/lbs at the muzzle. http://www.chuckhawks.com/magnum_rimfire_comparison.htm

Cabela's, Sportsman's Guide, Midway, Cheaper Than Dirt, and a lot of bigger gun shops all have it.
