Mowing 14 acres with a 2N or 8N Ford would not rate high on my list of things to do.

You are talking about tractors that are between 20 and 27 horsepower. So, at best, you will be able to run a 5-foot brush hog......but slowly. Something in the 40-60 horsepower range would run a 5-footer at a good clip or even a 6-footer quite handily. Now you're mowing. And it won't take you all day to do it.

You may also want to look into a machine that's a little newer. Not that tractors from the 1940's and 1950's are not servicieable machines........but something from the 1970's or 1980's will have you a lot less beat up and worn out by the end of the job. User-friendliness, I guess.

You might also want to consider a diesel over a gas tractor. More torque and better fuel economy.

What is your budget??

$5K is going to be at the low end of what you're going to find something enjoyable to operate, IMHO.

But look into these:

Massey 245

Allis Chalmers D15, D17 or 170

International 454, 464

John Deere 2020

Some of these you may not be able to find within your budget. Some you should not have trouble. Try looking here:

Honestly for the range I think I would try to find a kubota L series and get a 5 foot or 6 foot finish mower, sometimes does not hurt to check dealers for trade ins. You probably want a cleaner cut than a bush hog is going to leave. Have seen older L series kubotas here in the paper for right around $5-6,000 and sometimes with implements.

I agree. Diesel for sure. I think Don and William nailed it. One thing to remember about the Fords too is that their PTO's on those models are not "live." In other words, when you stop, so does the PTO. I would think you would want a live PTO.

Guess I will pass on a FORD

I am friens with the John Deere dealer in Frederickburg TX

The sunis so hot and its so dry the grass has hardy grown from last months mowing

The deer are feeding on grass seed I planted2 yeara go I have 400 gallon empty diesel tanks onmy ranch

I assume you get a lot more time on a tank of diesel than gas right?

Also what do you save on fuel for ranch use? They ddye it purple or something?

How ahrd it it to get a sun canopy and roll bar put on?

109 yesterday at 5 00 PM

I can afford a few more bucks for a nice rig I want a 3 point rig right?

Thanks men

A lot more. I used to burn about 3 gallons of gas everytime I mowed my 1.5 acres. With the Kubota, I burn maybe 1, I really don't know. I can get at least 4 or 5 mowings out of a 5 gallon diesel tank.

Red dyed #2--fuel oil, diesel, same thing. You can use that and as long as you don't use it on public access roads, you're cool. I only burn about 20 gallons of diesel all year, so the hassle of getting the red stuff really isn't worth it.

Pretty easy, as long as you can pony the cash to get them, lol.

Yep. 3 pt allows you to put on all kinds of implements. You want at least a Class I which is the smallest.

JD, Massey, Kubota, take your pick in a mid size utility. Finish mower behind the tractor will make it a little tougher to mow close to objects, just takes a little more time, not a big deal though as you will be saving a lot of time with the bigger cut. You should be able to run a 6 ft mower with no problems with a 40 hp diesel tractor. If you get a small mid size the deck will likely be wider than your tire width, covers your tracks.

On the diesel, I mow about 3 acres of yard with my kubota, also mow along the drive and along the electric fence in the pasture beside the yard and I also sweep the yard with a 42 inch sweeper, 5 gallons of diesel in the mower will last me about 3 weeks, when I was cutting with a gas mower it was taking me about 2.5-3 gallons of gas per cutting and I was not cutting the drive or pasture, nor was I pulling the sweeper with it.

Only drawback to a canopy is if you were to have a folding rops and you intended to fold it down. You probably don't need folding rops though, unless you are mowing under trees. The canopies are pretty reasonable and are easy to put on yourself, the dealer would probably put one on for you for little of nothing though if you happened to buy it from them. I do have a canopy on my M4700, but not on my little bx series kubota. For mowing around trees to be honest sometimes I kind of wished I had folding rops on my little tractor.
