Can anybody on here give me any comments if they shoot a 7mm Ultra Mag.? I've been having my eye on gettin a Remington model 700 SPS stainless 7mm Ultra Mag. I will mainly use it for deer, and when I get older I will be able to try and draw tags in Kentucky for Elk. So let me know what ya'll think of them?

BTW- I'm not afraid of holding on to the end of kicking mule..lol

I was looking at that same gun but instead decided on the regular 7mm Win Mag because of this main reason.... Ammunition.... Oh and BTW I live extremely close to SW VA and actually have worked in VA anywhere between Duffield, Pennington Gap down to Ewing.....

Yehh, I hear ya..$50 per box of 20 can be pricy, But I figured I'll pick me up a set of dyes since we already have all the supplies for reloading and start after I do some shootin with the factory ammo.

I live in Gate City, Scott County Virginia, Only about 1/2-3/4 hour from the KY border. You ever been around Gate City?

i shoot the 7mm_08 and i love it on my tc encore. It kicks a lil bit but drops them way out there. Shot a 8-point several years ago and ranged it at 397yrds. dropped him in his tracks. Enjoy

I've used the 7mm ultra mag. It's a BIG Gun....As a few replies have already stated, the cost is a factor, but if you reload it should not be too bad. I'd go with the 7mm 08, or regular 7mm. Both are good deer guns.

I was looking at the balistics for the 7mm ultra compared to the regular 7mm mag with the same brand/style load in the same gun, and the 7mm ultra gives 250 more FPS at the muzzle and 143 at 500 yards.

It also gives 513 more ft/lbs at the muzzle and 192 more at 500 yards. I know in some of that it isn't much difference but the main reason I want it is because...It's a 7mm Ultra Mag. :hammer1:

I'm guessing you were looking at Remington's ballistics pages.

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/comparative_ballistics_results.aspx?data=PRC7MMRA*R7MSTW1*PR7UM1

Here I ran a 3-way comparison with the 7 Rem Mag, the 7 STW and the 7 RUM. It's a good place to start and will give you a rough idea of what to expect. But I can tell you from firsthand experience (in loading for the 7 STW) that these numbers don't always reflect what happens in the real world. There's almost 300 fps difference between what Remington says their 140 gr. 7 STW load will do and what my 140 gr. load will do (it's not an overloaded round, either). I'm pretty confident that if you get a 7 RUM and a set of loading dies, you will be able to easily outpace the 7 Rem Mag by a good deal more than 250 fps.

Think if it were me since the extra velocity seems to be your primary concern, that I would probably look at the 300 win mag. The sps stainless is offered in 300 win mag. You get more versatility that way. Seems ammo availability for the 7 rum could be an issue. From what I have seen ammo pricing on 300 win mag and 7 mm mag are comparable, pricing on the 7 rum and the 300 wsm seems a bit higher and not as many different factory ammo loads offered.

For sometime, I've been looking at getting a .270 or something in 7mm as a good all-around rifle that I could use on pronghorn, mulies, and/or elk......as well as coyotes here in IL (saving the pelts isn't a concern). What would be best?

My brother already has a 30/06, so I'd like to get something different.

I think that gun is a beauty, but is likely too big for the deer you will be hunting - excellent for those bears though.

I shot a nice 8 pointer in the George Washington National Forest ( a bit north of you, I know ) and it put a hole in that buck's neck the size of my foot. 180 grain bullet. I thought I might be taking longer shots, but this bad boy walked 30 yards away walking after a doe.

Some people say the bigger the better - I don't know about that. Had this not happened to me, I would have agreed, but that gun was just too much POW.

The 7mm RUM is a awesome gun, If you got good shot placment it wont make a huge hole. I shot a doe 2 years ago with my 300 RUM at about 30 yards and i couldn;t even find the exit hole. It must not of hit anything and i guess its so fast the bullet didn;t even expand. Hit a sholder tho thats gunna be a diffrent story.

But i think your on the right track with the 7mm, its a good all around gun. I would have no fear going moose or bear hunting with this.

My wife shoots a Ruger M77 Compact 7mm-08 and i really like the gun, very accurate and very recoil friendly.
