My Son's First time in the Blind

Yesterday was my last chance to go out to the goose blind for the season. The weather was warm (50s) so I decided to take my son (9 yr old) out with me. I was hunting with another hunter who had also brought along his son (5 yr old). The afternoon started pretty slow but about 4:30 we called two groups in over the course of about 15 minutes period, and we put 9 birds on the ground (resident Canada Geese). The boys were all smiles. They couldn't get enough pictures taken afterward -- you'd swear they'd done the shooting. Great time!!

So you've got a 9 and 5 year old retreivers! That's the way my brother and I started. Dad would drop a goose, and we'd get to run out and pick it up for him. We thought it was great fun until we'd have to slog all the way across a fresh plowing and then turn around with a seven pound goose and have to carry it all the way back.

You guys are doing it right! Thanks for introducing your kids to hunting!

clayman - I grew up in MN and what you describe in your email is exactly what we did as kids when my Dad would hunt. Some of my fondest memories are those days hunting with Dad, even those before I was old enough to carry a gun.

Have I asked you (clayman) what part of MN you from? I grew up in Ruthton, MN that's a VERY small town down in SW MN along Hwy 23 between Pipestone and Marshall

I grew up on the Iron Range in a little town called Hoyt Lakes. I've been in the twin cities now since '93.

One thing to consider when you do is do everything you can to ensure it's an enjoyable experience. I actually cancelled the first attempt to take my son out because the temp was going to be too low. They can learn to rough it after they get hooked. It doesn't take many satisfying trips to get them hooked, in my son's case I think that number is 1.
