Ive been shooting my block for a while, its been shot roughly 20000 times in five years... its now worn to pieces and its almost in two pieces. I would like a glen del full rut but i dont have the money, I bought one of those 120 cheap deer targets, wore out the insert in a month and got a new one only to cut it in half a week later:hammer1:. Id like to know how to make a good target to stop alot of shots without pass through and I wont break my back pulling it out. Any help would be nice, I dont like bending all my vanes with pass throughs, how can I straighten the vanes, or get them re-done?

Thanks,

Cody

One important question is: are you shooting field tips or broadheads. The best target for field tips that I have used is the old compressed corregated cardboard butt. It takes a bit of construction, but some 1/2" threaded rod and a bit of angle iron will make a good cardboard press. Then you fill it with cardboard such that you are shooting into the corrugations, tighten the whole thing down, and it will last a heck of a long time. If used outdoors, you can build a small shed over it to protect it from the weather. every so many years, you can pull it all apart and re-arrange the cardboard when you finally have some soft spots. The one I use has taken thousands of shots and after about 15 years is probably just getting to the point where it needs all new cardboard.

Broadheads are a different story. I have not found any material that will stand up to long term broadhead shooting. What I finally have done is purchased one of those cheapie $20 styrofoam targets just before each season and shooting that for the season, buying a new one the following year. The nature of broadheads is such that they tend to chop holes out of any kind of material that you use. There is no such thing as a self-healing material when you are using broadheads. So I simply go for a super cheap sacrificial styrofoam target, knowing full well that it will be destroyed within one season and have to be replaced the following year.

I have read on AT that people are making their own block tarkets with grocery store bags. I'm saving up a few and I'm going to give it a try. Another one I made that was way cool was a cheap turkey decoy I bought on sale. I filled it with spray foam and wala instant turkey target for about 1/10th the price.

Get Luke (aka VermontHunter) to post picture of the target he made.

I've got several targets I've made with 40lb weatherproof dogfood bags filled with heavy paper wads. I've got another one filled with old t-shirts. 100's of holes and about 6" of penetration. I've not had a pass-through so far. I got a 32x32x16" replacement bag off of AT and am filling it with t-shirts, grocery bags and material from an 8 year old worn out bag target. That big bag is going to take some time to fill.
