Darron
I plan on putting in a brassica mix this month. From all my readings, everyone says to plant around the last week of July. I am going to be down around my farm for business on Tuesday July 7 and thought about going ahead and planting then since I will be down there and the plot is all ready tilled and sprayed. Do you feel this is too early? I am planting a mix of Purple top turnips, dwarf essex rape and appin forage turnips. There's no rain next week, so the seed probably wouldn't germinate for another couple days, which would end up being like a mid-July planting. Would this be ok? Average frost date for my area is 9/19, 60 days before would be 7/19.
Tominator
If you get rain, they will be fine. Personally, I'd wait until early to mid August.
PotashRLS
I would wait till there is rain in the forecast. Early July seems too soon also. We do ours up here toward the end of July.

Called several food plot companies and all said to plant 60 days from first frost. In the Athens area of OHio, average frost is 9/19, 60 days from that is 7/19????????????? dogdoc
Average first frost in Oklahoma is the middle of October. I plant mine the when I plant all my cool season plots--which is usually the first week of September.

I plant mine the when I plant all my cool season plots--which is usually the first week of September. If I planted then, the brassicas would have less than a month to grow before first frost. Screw it, I'll try it and see how it goes. The next forecasted rain is Friday, so the seed shouldn't germinate until then. It will be like a mid-july planting and then I'll plant my cereal grains the first 2 weeks of August and be done before I start back to work. I'd have guessed the average would be sometime in October. According the sources I checked, your average frost date is in October. http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov/climatenormals/clim20supp1/states/OH.pdf
MUDRUNNER
I usually plant my brassicas in central Illinois labor day weekend and always had a pretty solid crop.Brassica's seem to grow really quick around here.If your a little farther north I would think mid august would be ideal. Darron
http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/oh.html 9/19 as an average I talked to a central ohio farmer last night and he told me farmers start planting turnips/brassicas in central Ohio as soon as the wheat is being baled which is right now. He said they will begin spreading cereal grains such as rye as early as Aug 1.
wtnhunt
Good luck. Where you are at is probably not near as hot or dry as it is here during July and August. Afraid planting that early here would be a mistake. We usually shoot for getting fall plots in around the first weekend of September, never had any issues with brassicas plants having enough time to mature, but our winters are a bit milder than yours.
