texastrophies
Not real good at telling stories, so I will let the pictures speak for me, for the most part. Starting off, just outside of Wichita Falls, TX, I noticed this uniquely manicured trees out in the middle of a pasture. After a little closer inspection, I found the reason for this. This picture was taken at the Capulin Volcano park. Entrance to: While at the Whittington Center, we road around a little and saw numerous deer & antelope. Here are a couple of samples. Here is Jake getting annouced at the closing ceremonies of the camp. Since Jake and 3 other campers had birthdays while at the camp, they had a cake for each one of them. Here is Jake's. After leaving there, we stopped by the Rio Grande Gorge in Northern New Mexico. Notice the white spec in the bottom of the picture. Looking a little closer we figured out it was the remains of a jeep. Do not know the story of it though. After leaving there we headed to Chama, NM to spend the night and then ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad the next morning. Here is the depot in Chama. Here is the sign of the Cumbres Pass, notice the difference in elevation from this pic to the previous one. Here is our Engineer. Jake & I on the train. The next few are all scenery pics taken while on the 64 mile train trip. After moving on from the train, we ran up through southwestern Colorado. Here is a unique rock formation on top of a mountain. We also spotted this fella in SW Colorado. I am going to end this post here and start another one, just in case so I don't lose everything I have already done. texastrophies
Here is the second part. This was our next stop at 4 Corners. The juncture of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah & Arizona. Jake standing in 4 states at once. Closeup of the actual monument. Here is our first sighting of Shiprock in New Mexico. From there we headed south to El Morrow, the Inscription Rock. There are inscriptions there from 1605. Here are a few pics I took there. This is from the top of El Morrow. Balancing rock on El Morrow. Ruins that have been excavated on top of El Morrow. The first elk we spotted on out trip. There were actually about a half dozen here. From El Morrow we headed to El Malpais, which is a large area of lava flow. For those of you who read Louis L'Amour, the book FLINT was written about this area. This rock arch was in the same vicinity as El Malpais After leaving there, we headed south to Unit 17 near Truth or Consequences, NM where I will be deer hunting this fall. On the way, we passed this interesting site. As we approached the camp site, we spotted this A couple of camp pics. When we left there we went through Roswell, NM and then headed over to Ft. Sumner to the Billy the Kid museum & grave site. Here are a few pictures from there. This last picture is the result of a blowout about 50 miles from home. wtnhunt
I looked at the first set of pics yesterday Jeff and the forums crashed as I replied. Looks like you and Jake had a great time. Was able yesterday to see all the pics in your first post. For some reason the pics are not loading here now for me this morning, all red x's including your initial opening post. Maybe too flooded for one page for them to load or maybe it is just my internet connection/computer? Weird, they are loading now, maybe a photobucket issue. JJL
That's a very beautiful part of the country, as long as you like it dry. Lots of game as well. Memories that last a lifetime. Mom would be very proud of you and Jake. Take care............... JJL

redkneck
That was great, Jeff. Man, I need to make a trip out to the SW sometime soon. I guess that's about the only part of the country I've never made it out to. So much scenery and history and game all rolled up into one package. Thanks for sharing those. :cowboy::whip:

texastrophies
Just had an estimate done to repair my truck from the blow out. $1,400 if they can salvage the grill, $2,000 if it has to be replaced, which they think it will because it looks like some of the connection points are broke. Texan_Til_I_Die
Too bad about the blowout, but otherwise looks like a great trip. I've taken almost that exact same route going and coming from the place I mule deer hunt in southeast Utah. Did you travel much on old Route 66? I like using it when coming through New Mexico.
