To let a big buck grow to his full potential, I would let him walk and see how he grows, if he doesn't grow at all next fall, then I would get him out of the gene pool. If he grows next year into a big mature buck, then it has paid off. Either way you win!!

First off, after looking at that pic again, I am certain this deer will grow a lot more this year. He's going to be wide.

They way a deer grows antler is typically from the inside-out. Meaning that the inner tines usually reach full or near full length before the outer ones do. Kind of like a tree limb growing off-shooting branches. Those brow tines are long and pretty sharp, meaning they are approximately what they are going to be. The bulbous looking ends on the rest of the tines mena they are not nearly finished. The g2's will reach full length before the g3's and so-on. Of course, they will grow simultaneously, but basically, the antler that comes first finishes first. Why do you think they get shorter as the main beams get longer? The brows and beams shoot out first. Usually the brows are pretty much full length as the mains are budding the g2's. While the mains are growing out to where the g3's will bud, the g2's are growing and getting some length and so on. It's very fuild actually and very much like filling a mold with hot plastic. The areas it gets to first are the first to fill to an extent and will fill out a good and fair amount before the material moves on. Different dynamics at work here of course, but in action, looks very similar. Keep taking pictures of this deer. If you really want to see what I'm talkng about start taking pics of bucks in March or April of next year and look through them every week. You'll see it in motion.

We need to see some updated pics of this deer. Then, you'll see what I'm talking about. Take my word for it. I'd be very excited to have this deer on my cam. I'm starting to take pics in my area next week. You can go ahead and start planning to hunt this deer-this year. I'd be shocked if this deer didn't wind-up 140.

I would guess he will be more in the 120 inch range.

Ha! :clown: That buck is real close to that right now, just look at the width and brows! He'll at least be 130 P&Y when he sheads velvet. Either way, if he came by me he'd be getting a Rage through the cage let me tell you! ;)

Nope, sorry. Without velvet that deer is not 120 inches. Heck even with velvet he isnt. All he has goin for him right now is width. No mass, no tine length, and no 130 P&Y when he sheds velvet.:)

What we're looking at in that picture is a nice buck in early, early July. He still has close to 1.5-2 months of growing to do. Obviously he's real wide and most of the growth will be concentrated on mass and tine length. As evidenced by his brows, this buck has a lot of potential and 1.5-2 months is a lot of time to grow some inches in these vital aspects. That buck will at least be P&Y minimum net, maybe not 130, but I wouldn't be surprised. Like I said, either way I'd take him just due to the fact that he is a great deer and not many bucks in this area get to be that big especially on public ground. Another thing to consider, it's not too hard to misjudge a deer when you are looking at a difference in 5 points (125-130). So that may be what is getting me.:D

Those pictures were from at least before the first of July. I live about an hour away from that property so I try to get down there every 2 weeks they did alot of farming in that field (cut the wheat then planted oats) was there yesterday to fine tune my stand set up and I moved my cam to a nearby location. So he should already be quite a bit different the next time I see him. When I checked that cam it was July 3rd. Those pics were from between June 20th up til July 1st my date and time stamp on my camera were off. So hopefully I can get updated pics soon.

I never said that he would go 140 or anything like that. Honestly my biggest buck is a 7 point that I got last year. I have had hard luck getting stands stolen and other people trespass onto properties I've been hunting. This will only be my second season hunting this property so considering those pictures came in late June I was pretty excited to see that deer hoping he would be a good buck by the time bow season opened. I didn't mean to start a holy war I have no clue as to how much that buck may or may not have grown since the last time I have saw him. I know it may not be a good buck according to some of you but me personally I just enjoy being in the woods and getting close to deer and if god presents me with an opportunity to harvest a deer I take what god gives me. I don't have the opportunity to wallk out my back door into 100 acres of property and do what I want with my own property.

Aww...we were just having some friendly aggressive negotiations, not a holy war! :D:D:D Trust me, I think I can safely say that a good portion of us would shoot that buck this fall if he came by our stands. ;) Of course, if a bigger buck is in the area some people would hold out on him, but he's a great buck all the same.

Yeah we may have taken it a little far with guessing the score and what not, and I apologize. That will be a nice deer come fall, and whether or not some of us on here would or would not shoot him does not matter. If it would make you proud to shoot that deer than thats all that matters. I hope you get him :)

LOL--we were just teasing bro. Don't worry.

I like to stir it up in the summer because there's nothing else to do. :D

BTW--no way that deer gets close to 140.

I once saw a buck standing in a beanfield on Father's Day. I saw him again October 1, and then again November 14. That last sighting occasioned a guy putting a tape to him, and figuring out that he netted 160"+ change typical. When I saw him in June, he already had very tall tines and width. I use that as my frame of reference when I say that is a buck that I don't see getting up into the 140's. He's got a load of potential, and FOR ME, I have got to wait and see what he becomes next year. Of course, that 160 is on my wall already, with a friend or two, so I have different standards than some.

Hahahaha don't worry. I was just trying to clarify that I am not trying to make that deer to be something he is not. When I first got the pictures the thought of P&Y never came into mind. I am not sure whether there is a bigger deer around or not. All I know is there are alot of genetics for sure. When you talk to the neighbors they always tell you how they saw the biggest deer. With all the food, water, and cover around where we hunt I don't doubt it. You just never know until you actually see the deer for yourself. I've never hunted an area with as many deer and bucks wandering around as this place does. I have taken deer each of the past 10 seasons (I'm 26) including does, a 6 point in 2001 at 10 steps on the ground with a bow which was also my first buck and then I took a 7 point last year so now I am just looking to get my first really respectable buck. I do things the right way just haven't been able to get the opportunity. I'm just itching to get out there and see some deer.

Yeah I need to see more pics too. I am going down soon within the next few days. Problem is I got word Monday that someone went onto the property and stole one of our cameras. My camera was still where I put it. So hopefully when I get there mine is not gone too. Because we have a REAL strong idea as to who it was that went and took it.
