Strut10
My 2 acres of corn is a total loss. I know I planted it for the deer......................but I kinda thought they'd wait to eat it until after it grew and made ears. Silly me. Went up yesterday to see if it was time to spray it yet, only to find that 85-90% of it was eaten off. Guess if I can find the time, I'll turn it under and plant a brassica mix. Dunno. HUNTINGMAN
I sure wouldnt have thought that, could they be lacking something else in there diet that would cause them to eat the corn so early?
Drop-time
Ouch! Yeah they got some of my sweet corn in the bottom this year. I was tilling up my corn plot tonight-better late than never I guess. Frustrating to see hard work go to waste though....

dogdoc
must have a big problem with over-population. I have never planted corn but I can't plant sunflowers. The dang deer eat them when they are 6" tall all the way to the ground.
wtnhunt
That stinks Don. You must have a healthy population of deer. Hope the brassicas works out better for you.
Tominator
Yep, they tend to snip the tops off when they are new. I've never had that kind of loss, but I've lost more than a few stalks over the years. Like Todd said, you might want to go buy a 50lb sack of black oilers, broadcast that and drag them in. You have enough time for them to set seed if you hurry and the deer seem to love sunflower. If any of them actually set seed it will benefit the turkey and pheasants. PotashRLS
Some of our plots didn't get big enough to have the deer eat the hearts out of the corn. Two of my buddies lost 3 acres each to Sandhill Cranes. They go right down the row and pull out each newly sprouted stalk and eat the tender kernel. My boss just rented 10 acres on the outskirts of Green Bay to a farmer. It was take-back land that is pretty wet normally. The Cranes ate all 10 acres by pulling the corn out one by one. The cranes are getting to be worse than anything else because we lose out planting dates and now it will be too late to plant corn again. Does anyone else have that problem? camoman1
I know alot of the farmers around here (which probably aint real far from you) have the same problem, we need a season on them dang Cranes!! Strut, that really is too bad they ate it all already! I agree that is sounds like you have one or two too many deer around there. I didnt realize how easily deer can keep a plot mowed down until I fenced off a bit of my clover plot....it was 2x as tall as the rest last year. Good luck with whatever you decide is plan B!! JJL
Live and Learn.................... Tough part is, if you plant it later it might not get the moisture needed to germinate and grow. Tough one. I'm sure you'll find a reasonable solution, that's the fun part. But, it does sound like you might have a "few" too may deer hanging around. I used a Wildlife Blend that is distributed here locally and intended for dry climates as a substitute for grass in our yard. The deer are doing a splended job of keeping it at a closely cropped 3" and it looks good as well. When season gets here, I'm not sure if I'll shoot them or just open the door and let them walk into the house.
hunter109
well the deer will eat corn in any stage that it is in most of the time they eat most of it when it is first coming up well that is what i would do well plant some beans out next year and spray a few weeks after they come up that usualy give them time to come up i am a farmer so i know how to grow all kind of **** man

Now, there's something I hadn't thought of. Think I'll toss some sunflower in with the same mix I used on my powerline plot and the one adjacent to the massacred corn plot.
